Inside Business: New business offers needed service
Growing up, Ryan Powell always owned cats and dogs.
“I just love animals,” the 23-year-old Estes Park resident said. “I wanted to make a living out of it. In the past, I had done sitting and dog walking on the side. Once I started sitting and caring for them for customer, I just loved being able to connect with the differently, you know, caring for them and not just playing with them.”
That notion of helping people care for their pets was the genesis for Estes Pet Service which Powell started in February.
“I provide dog walking, dog sitting in-house, pet check ins and waste removal,” he explained.
Most services are about $20 an hour.
Anyone who lives in the state knows Coloradoans are crazy about their dogs. Since Estes Park is a popular retirement community, many older pet owners may need some help with their furry friends.
“Sometimes they need assistance, and that’s what I’m here for,” Powell noted. “I like to sit for pet in the clients’ homes because I feel like the animals are more comfortable that way.”
Originally from Los Angeles, Powell came to school at Eagle Rock in Estes Park in 2012. After graduation, he moved around a bit and lived in Idaho for awhile.
“Once I came back here, I knew I wanted to stay,” Powell said. “It always called back to me. I love the community, the national park and the wildlife. I’ve never met as many dog owners as I have since moving here.”
In speaking with people who run the pet supply store, Powell realized the Estes Park community had a need for more pet services.
“I just brought it up one day and the people at the store said, ‘You have to do this,’” he remembered.
Powell has publicized his service through Facebook and by word of mouth at grooming businesses and the pet supply store. He plans on contacted pet-friendly hotels and local veterinarians to spread the word about his new service.
