A senior developer knows that there’s more than just the technical aspects of the job. The senior developer has more awareness when it comes to the business and the economic factors that justify their job’s existence than less experienced developers.

I’m excited about the future PWAs offer. The web, including mobile apps, should be open. It should be competitive. Despite Facebooks and Googles and Apples, the web can remain open, and PWAs will play a role.

When it comes to communication with clients you’ll often see a senior developer handling it. The senior developer understands the problems that the client has and is able to come with a plan to solve these problems.

But not only could you ask the senior developer for help whenever you’re stuck. The senior developer should also be able to answer questions regarding the business and clients.

A great benefit of mentoring less experienced developers is that you can increase the quality of the work that gets done within the team. You can directly impact the way code gets written by giving feedback and help other developers grow.

This mentorship comes in various forms. A less experienced developer can walk to the desk of the senior developer to ask for help. But another, informal, way of mentorship could be a code review. Whenever the less experienced developer finishes a task a code review gets done by the senior developer. The discussions that emerge and the feedback that the less experienced developer receive will help them improve a lot.

Like said before, being a great programmer doesn’t make you a senior developer. Their skillset is much more than just programming. And being a good communicator is one of those skills. One might argue that communication skills are just as important as programming skills.

But the web is a place for sovereignty and choice. Part of that is responsibility. If people are never given the opportunity to learn how to protect themselves, they will always be beholden to others. Perhaps, PWAs offer people the opportunity to take back control and truly learn how to protect themselves.

Less experienced developers focus too much on the tech. This comes due to the fact that they don’t master their tech stack yet — which is something a senior developer does. Their primary focus is on becoming a master of their tech stack. Although it makes sense, it’s important to keep the business in mind.
