On the ‘How will you use the Twitter API or Twitter data?’ page, select yes or no, as shown above. I have put a few example answers here — these are only valid for this specific use-case, so please adjust them to your own needs where relevant.

this: If the stateful variable is only needed in this Widget, or widgets exactly 1 widget up or down the tree, then it belongs in a local scope. Use a StatefulWidget and be happy. If you need to pass the state down the tree, then simply put the variable in the child Widget’s constructor. If the same variable is being passed down through constructors 2 widgets deep, it’s time to look at higher-scope state management.

When designing a brutalist website, aesthetic beauty is not even the fifth thing on your mind. This is probably good news for full stack developers who aren’t big fans of front-end. Nonetheless, there is still a difference between a poorly designed website and a brutalist website. The difference is that brutalist websites are ugly on purpose.

Our request will not return exactly what we want. If we take a look at the very first entry of our returned request we will see very quickly that we are not returning the full length of tweets — and that they may not even be relevant:

First, we give our app a name. It has to be unique, so be creative. We will receive our API keys; this is the only time we will see them, so keep them somewhere safe (and secret)!

Through sentiment analysis, we can take thousands of tweets about a company and judge whether they are generally positive or negative (the sentiment) in real-time! We will cover:

“In its ruggedness and lack of concern to look comfortable or easy, Brutalism can be seen as a reaction by a younger generation to the lightness, optimism, and frivolity of today’s web design.”

Unbothered, raw, ugly, reactionary, bold, uncomfortable are some of the words one can use to describe a brutalist website. If you’re a nerd like me, by now, you’re probably wondering how could such a strange design movement even be a thing? We need to dive deeper into brutalist web design’s architectural roots for the answer.

As we add more and more parameters, the API address string can quickly get overcrowded and messy. To avoid this, we can move them into a dictionary — which we then feed to the params argument of our get request.

That is where sentiment analysis comes in. Sentiment analysis is a particularly interesting branch of Natural Language Processing (NLP), which is used to rate the language used in a body of text.

The UX Collective donates US$1 for each article published in our platform. This story contributed to Bay Area Black Designers: a professional development community for Black people who are digital designers and researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area. By joining together in community, members share inspiration, connection, peer mentorship, professional development, resources, feedback, support, and resilience. Silence against systemic racism is not an option. Build the design community you believe in.

Brutalism is an architectural style that was very popular from the 1950s up until the 1980s. In particular, institutional or civic buildings adopted this style. There are many reasons for its popularity, but the main one is associated with World War 2. After the devastation created by the war, there was a need to build offices, schools, churches, and other buildings and quickly. Because of the war, cheap concrete and steel were abundant, which are the primary materials used to build brutalist buildings. The affordability and practicality were crucial elements, and so Brutalism slowly took over the big cities of the world. In particular, UK and Eastern European Communist countries.

The term brutalist web design was first coined by Pascal Deville, a founder of the brutalistwebsites.com. Even if you’ve never heard of this term, I bet you’ve probably visited a few brutalist websites without even knowing. Here’s how Deville defines a brutalist website:

We can improve our request further. First, we can tell Twitter which language tweets to return (otherwise we get everything) with lang=en for English. Adding count=100 increases the maximum number of tweets to return to 100.
