  • Schools are still waiting for the green light from state officials after the potential start date for the winter season passed earlier this week. The state has yet to announce a follow-up date.

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the Finger Lakes region, schools remain at a standstill for word on basketball, wrestling, hockey and cheerleading.

David Richardson, executive director for Greece Central Schools athletics and student operations, says the student athletes are anxious to start playing.

"Obviously, we want to see the green light for those high-risk sports to begin. We’re still hopeful, but each passing day seems to be more and more concerning," said Richardson.

Initially, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association gave schools a targeted start date of Jan. 4. Then, it decided to postpone that date with no word on the next possible option.

Richardson says Greece has gotten creative and is trying to come up with alternatives for student athletes who otherwise would be on the playing field.

SHEPHERDSTOWN -- Shepherd expects to hold spring sports in season starting in February.

And the university is hopeful of having some fall and winter sports take place to some degree of competition after the new semester begins on Jan. 19.

It could be a sports extravaganza on campus beginning for the most part in March after athletic competition has been on hold at Shepherd since March 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic shut it all down.

"As of now, with everything being equal, our spring sports -- baseball, softball, women's lacrosse, men and women's tennis, and men and women's golf -- will compete," Shepherd Vice President for Athletics Chauncey Winbush said.

Each of them have full schedules, starting with baseball on Feb. 23 at Francis Marion.

Softball follows on Feb. 27 in an event at Glenville State, while the other three sports begin their schedules in mid-March.

Women's golf will be making its debut for Shepherd when both the men's and women's teams head to Barton for a two-day event starting on March 22.

The lacrosse squad will host Bloomsburg on March 17, and the tennis teams will entertain West Virginia Wesleyan on March 19.

There also is expected to be other sports played, including a pair of football games for the Rams.

That's a reduction in some earlier thoughts of Shepherd playing eight games and then five games in the spring.

"We'll look at every opportunity to see if it makes sense," Winbush said. "Again, two games is the goal. We may find one game or maybe no games."

As for other fall and winter sports, Winbush said the soccer teams would participate in their typical non-championship season and play two to four games. He's hopeful of getting in two or three volleyball matches. The women's basketball team wants to play "six legitimate contests," while Winbush said the men would prefer to hold upward of four scrimmages.

As for cross country, which is making a return at Shepherd, it's looking like the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference will hold a league meet if enough teams are interested, according to Winbush.

"The caveat is obviously COVID," Winbush said.

He said the school has to follow NCAA testing requirements for athletes.

"We're up for the challenge," he said. "We hope to find some semi-normal existence this semester."

He realizes there might be some hiccups beyond weather issues along the way.

"With traditional spring sports, it will be as consistent as it normally is," Winbush said.

He pointed out everyone is eager for a return to action.

"We're optimistic and making plans to try to move forward with our student-athletes to give them the best-possible situation we can," Winbush said. "We got to be fluid and flexible."

Winbush said the athletic department took a financial hit when Shepherd couldn't play in the fall, much of that stemming from the lack of football, which is always a huge draw and moneymaker for the Rams.

"We missed football games in the fall, missed concessions, ticket sales, parking and corporate sales, as well," Winbush said. "That was a big hit for us."

He said, though, that no traveling associated with a sports shutdown in the fall helped "offset some of the loss."

Winbush said some of the travel involving teams not in their traditional seasons will be limited.

“We’re trying to provide opportunities for kids in limited ways. We’re trying to offer open gyms where kids can still come in small groups following the guidelines, interacting with the coach and working on fundamentals and skills," said Richardson.

Ultimately, he says it continues to be a waiting game while safety remains the utmost priority.

"When we get the green light, we'll be doing what we can to provide those opportunities, but still keeping those safe and healthy guidelines in place," said Richardson.

The State Department of Health has yet to decide a start date for spring sports.

Meanwhile, fall sports including football, volleyball and cheerleading are still scheduled to begin March 1.
