If you’re noticing your hope fade, Truitt suggests a simple exercise she uses with her clients: Check in on your pinky.

Sustained high performance: As compared to a family, where everyone is included regardless of performance, a championship team makes a concerted effort to raise the bar on talent, including changing out team members when needed.

Sometimes, you won’t be able to hold onto it. That’s fine. Every time you approach a low point with curiosity instead of self-judgment, you’re teaching your brain how to respond more positively in times of stress — a skill we all still need for the foreseeable future.

I’ve been watching DeepMind for years, especially its early triumphs in the game space (it beat champions at the difficult Go game). Metz writes that these accomplishments “have no practical applications,” but I’d contend that successes in any difficult machine learning neural network task is a foundation for even more difficult ones, like figuring out how a protein will fold based on the amino acids in the protein string.

For me, though, this is a validation of artificial intelligence, and a strong counterargument to those who’ve spent too much time watching Terminator, War Games, and other AI-horror-porn.

At Coinbase, we say that we are focused on building. What does this mean? It means we are going to focus on being the best company we can be, and making progress toward our mission, as compared to broader societal issues.

Sometimes, you won’t be able to hold onto it. That’s fine. Every time you approach a low point with curiosity instead of self-judgment, you’re teaching your brain how to respond more positively in times of stress — a skill we all still need for the foreseeable future.

The “Techlash” that started last year and flowed steadily through 2020, paints technology and the tech giants that run the world as dark monoliths, casting broad and sometimes sinister shadows across our lives.

Cade Metz’ New York Times piece details how the neural network based DeepMind was used to find a solution to a very difficult biochemistry problem: How to identify protein folds and use that information to figure out what the protein might do and how it could interact with other proteins and even, say, viruses.

Source amazing talent: We create job opportunities for top people, including those from underrepresented backgrounds who don’t have equal access to opportunities, with things like diverse slates (Rooney rule) on senior hires, and casting a wide net to find top talent.

It’s a stunning piece of work because, as AI’s are wont to do, DeepMind’s “AlphaFold” figured out how to identify a protein’s shape in not years, months, or even weeks, but in under an hour.

Sometimes that’s true. So much power, control, and wealth consolidated in so few. But that’s never the whole story. This week’s DeepMind breakthrough is a reminder that the most cutting-edge technology, even those from companies that we no longer fully trust (DeepMind is owned by Alphabet, which owns Google), can alter our lives in demonstrably positive ways.

Technology, in many of its forms, is now the backbone of society. It’s the spine holding us up during this pandemic. To ignore it or rip it out is to reduce us to huddled masses of useless flesh. I think of my neighbor who, for reasons of her own, has no Internet or smartphone. She’s all but cut off from the world and crucial services (my wife is often stepping in to help). I think of the millions of people who would be unable to work if not for remote technology. I think of the children who would have to rely entirely on their parents for home education without computers, tablets, and Zoom. I think more prosaically of how we can get from point A to B without ever looking at a map and can find exactly what we need with a few keystrokes. I think of how the Internet is keeping the world supplied and making holiday gift giving possible without ever leaving the home.

Through this lens, we start to have a glimpse of a solution. A championship team wants to win, and every teammate is willing to make sacrifices to achieve that. They have each other’s back, and focus relentlessly on the long term goal, avoiding distractions.

There are many places that a company can choose to allocate its limited time and resources. There is never enough time to do everything, so companies need to choose what change they want to see in the world and focus there. It can take decades to move the needle on large global challenges.

build an enormous company or become the CEO of a company you work for, you’re going to be drowning in work. You’ll probably have next to no time. Your partner may even leave you. If you have kids, they probably won’t get to know you. There are downsides to “big.”
