Perfect race impossible

'But a perfect lap is impossible, so we have to be very satisfied. I am confident for tomorrow because I think we have a great base setting,' he added.

'Already there I understood, OK, today the pole position will be difficult,' said the 22-year-old, who has won the last two MotoGP races but struggled for speed on occasion this week.

'We must be happy because yesterday we were really far... and today we were closer and closer, maybe not close enough, but for the race distance I feel happy.'

Starting from the front

Rossi described making the front row as extremely important after a series of below par qualifying performances this year.

'Jorge and Marc are very fast from the beginning and if you start behind, it becomes impossible to stay with them,' said the nine-time world champion.

'It's very important to start from the front row because it will be a very hard race,' Rossi added.
