We live in a culture that condemns failing. But when we teach our children that all they need to succeed is to try harder, they can grow up to be stubborn adults who never quit the things they should quit.

I then went to YouTube and manually searched for videos related to medicine and medical school. I found that my tool had captured all the ones I’d be interested in watching. In particular, the second video by a doctor called Kevin Jabbal was one that enjoyed.

I tested my code further, and found I was quite consistently identifying great videos that I wanted to watch. But this is the problem with euphemisms. Young children often think in very literal terms. Most grief experts recommend giving children concrete information about death and then expecting lots of questions to follow.

It takes vulnerability and self-awareness to know when you have failed. And it’s hard to “dare greatly” and have the courage to try something new if you feel robbed of the reward you felt you were entitled to. It’s why so many people are shackled to a victim mentality.

A better option — instead of telling kids to try harder, tell them to fail smarter. Because it’s our failures that teach us how to start again and apply the lessons learned.

Remember that grief is a process, and a child goes through the same process as an adult. This means there will be days of anger, bargaining, or simply not accepting the truth. Expect to keep reinforcing that death means this person or pet is not coming back.

I immediately ran downstairs and asked her to point to where my derelict son had kicked her. She did, and with a frustrated sigh, I informed her, “We have been over this before. Good people are not color blind. Good people show up, see the downtrodden, and take steps to make the world a better place. Study after study has found higher sexual education also leads to lower rates of teen pregnancy. And the sobering statistics paint a terrifying picture for what they are up against — 1 in 4 teen girls today have an STD.

Because if you are vague about death, your child may wait for the deceased to return. Even worse, if you are not truthful about death, your child won’t trust the permanence of the living. In other words, they may worry that other loved ones will disappear.

I am guilty of this one. When our cat had cancer, I told my daughter that mommy and daddy had to put the cat “to sleep.” At the time, my daughter was five, so she immediately connected “sleep” with never waking up again. Weeks of nightmares followed.

I gently remind my children of the privilege they have. I don’t make them feel guilty about it. I want them to feel enough gratitude, so they never take that privilege for granted. And most importantly, they never get lazy about their responsibility to help others less fortunate.
