But venues have been closed since March. The NBA, they may be under their projections by billions but they are allowed to play and get some of it back. Same with the NFL, MLB, MLS, NASCAR, you name it, these billion dollar behemoths are still able to operate with their athletes as their pawns. Record labels are still getting fed by streaming as are the media conglomerates that own the licensing to The Chappelle Show, but the artist? SOL.

Here’s the thing — you have to earn the right to tell those type of jokes. You can’t go to an open mic where the average set is five minutes and spend HALF of that time telling ONE joke. This is the equivalent to Biggie’s Number Ten rule, this is strictly for live men, not for freshmen.

Nope. What it was instead was a commentary on licensing. A few weeks back it was announced that the Dave Chappelle Show would be coming to Netflix and HBO Max and fans celebrated the “non-exclusive pact between ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia.”

Usually, these type of stories are told for an early ice breaker. A cheap applause. And that’s how the story starts. Chappelle mentions flying in on a private jet to host SNL, right? So this is a “look how far we’ve come” story, right? Yes and no. Because I can imagine his great-grandfather being blown away by seeing his descendant on national television, an idol to whites and Blacks alike.

That’s the joke. That’s it. Two minutes and twenty seconds — from his entrance on the stage — and he told one joke, which, alone, wouldn’t be a joke, at least not a funny one. But with that little bit of back story, the weighted story of the Chappelle Show (the megahit show that he walked away from), the “look at all our progress” trope, yeah, all of that is to support a ten word joke.

But like I said, that’s just a release. Chappelle has an underlining theme here, a theme that we would know if this were a comedy special (the title would give it away) but this is an SNL monologue, chief. So we just have to keep up.

That’s where a group of active and retired Black firefighters went before the city to demand Mayo’s resignation for fostering a work environment that included countless episodes of racist hazing and harassment by White firefighters. One complainant spoke of having nails scattered under her truck’s tires and tobacco juice poured into her boots as she prepared to go out on a call. Another was told that his White wife couldn’t visit him at work, despite the fact that White firefighters’ partners showed up frequently. Two captains in the force, the group alleged, spoke about running over demonstrators who were protesting the murder of George Floyd; another White firefighter made a noose during a knot-tying class. The best part? All the city has done so far is call for a “climate assessment” evaluating the fire department. “We’d had very few grievances or complaints in the last couple of years,” said city manager Lee Garrity.
