Google and Facebook — not Apple — are killing the internet.
2020 might have been the biggest year for Apple in the company’s history. Their new Mac lineups going forward will feature their own silicon chips rather than Intel’s, the iPhone just received its biggest design change since the iPhone 6, and iOS 14 is the biggest change in software Apple has made since iOS 7.
But let’s talk about iOS 14 for a second.

To recap, iOS 14 — or more specifically, iOS 14.3 — features a wide array of privacy updates, most notably it requires all app developers to display more transparency about the information it gathers from you and users are now enabled to “opt out” of being tracked across the web by Facebook.
Facebook is obviously not happy as they launched a malicious ad-campaign targeted at Apple. The ad’s main message is “Apple vs Free Internet” and is making the case that banning personalized ads is going to hurt small businesses who utilize Facebook to reach new customers.
Meanwhile, the case that Apple is making is a moral one. They want to give users the rights over their data.
What Facebook fails to mention is their world of relentless surveillance, including following you to the supermarket, the phone store, the mall, or Forever 21.
Facebook uses their Audience Network to profile users on a variety of different websites, target ads towards them and build their profiles, and eventually re-target them with new ads that will hook you to different services.

Now, I know it’s super easy to hate on Apple simply because their luxurious line of smartphones can seem overly priced (even though all of Samsung’s phones compete at the same price points), but hear me out:
Google is worse than Apple and I’ll explain why.
Last month, I argued that Google Chrome — along with Google’s monopoly — should be brought down. Chrome is the worst browser I’ve ever used and I made a compelling case for that. One user even went as far to comment that “Chrome is basically just Google spyware.” And they are absolutely correct.

One case I’m surprised I have yet to discuss is the difference between Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS. Why do Apple devices tend to be so much more successful than Google devices?
There’s one argument that iPhone users love to make which is this: iMessage is so much better than texting on an Android. For me, that sums up the best experience on Google’s phones.
Google is a software company. They’ve always struggled to make compelling hardware because that’s not their thing. This is why Google makes good phones, but they always fail to compete with the iPhone or even other flagship Android phones.
They’ve also developed a messy line of brands — Pixel, Chrome, and Nest — all of which are confusing to consumers and make purchasing and fluidity among products difficult. In contrast to Apple’s Mac lineups, iPad, iPhone, and AirPods brands, all of which make sense to consumers. This is what Apple gets about smart business that Google doesn’t.
