He does not give them a preferential rate, nor do they stay at the properties for free, as the Trumps have claimed. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have poured from U.S. taxpayer coffers directly into Trump companies. And hundreds of thousands more — perhaps into the millions — have been spent at Trump-branded hotels by foreign diplomats, lobbyists, companies, and other sycophants hoping to ingratiate themselves with the president.

And then there’s the deal to build a Trump-branded hotel in Azerbaijan that never opened because, according to extensive reporting in the New Yorker, it “appears to be a corrupt operation engineered by oligarchs tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.”

But it’s not just around these allegations that what the Trump team says reveals more about their own wrongs than anyone else’s.
