The reality is that it’s Trump and his family who have used the presidency like a personal money-making scheme and the federal government as a family piggy bank, not Biden. Trump insists on traveling to his own properties, which he then bills to the government, and for rooms occupied by Secret Service agents. He does not give them a preferential rate, nor do they stay at the properties for free, as the Trumps have claimed. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have poured from U.S. taxpayer coffers directly into Trump companies. And hundreds of thousands more — perhaps into the millions — have been spent at Trump-branded hotels by foreign diplomats, lobbyists, companies, and other sycophants hoping to ingratiate themselves with the president.

The Trump children have also cashed in. Don Jr. has claimed he is acting “as a businessman” when he jets off to Indonesia and India to peddle Trump-branded properties; the family undertook additional property deals in Panama and Scotland during Donald Trump’s presidency. Ivanka enjoyed the ability to get her various brands trademarked in China at the same time that Beijing was trying to gain some leverage with the U.S. And Ivanka’s husband, Jared Kushner, has used his newfound political relevance to organize White House meetings with some of the same companies his family was hoping would extend loans to Kushner Companies — and after those meetings, that’s just what they did. And then there’s the deal to build a Trump-branded hotel in Azerbaijan that never opened because, according to extensive reporting in the New Yorker, it “appears to be a corrupt operation engineered by oligarchs tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.”
This politics of projection isn’t just reserved for rule-breaking — it’s how the elder Trump deals with any perceived enemy.
But it’s not just around these allegations that what the Trump team says reveals more about their own wrongs than anyone else’s. The latest Trump team accusation against Hunter Biden is vague, largely unfounded, and intentionally opaque, alleging Hunter gained business ties with the Chinese government while Joe Biden was working on China policy. “My father gave me an opportunity to work my way up in his company,” Donald Trump Jr. tweeted. “Joe gave his son China.” They’re peddling this line of attack despite the fact that President Trump has had a secret Chinese bank account while president — and that his businesses paid more in taxes in China than he did in U.S. federal income taxes.
The scale of the Trump family’s corruption, nepotism, and self-dealing is mind-boggling. Even more stunning, though, is watching them attack the Bidens on the same terms, claiming Hunter’s Burisma ties are a major scandal while they flout ethical rules and abuse the office of the presidency to fleece taxpayers, leverage their political power for personal financial gain, and enrich themselves and their families.
This politics of projection isn’t just reserved for ethical (and possibly legal) rule-breaking; it’s how the elder Trump deals with any perceived enemy: He heaps upon them all of his own obvious weaknesses and failings.
One of the president’s latest targets is Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has emerged as a trusted and widely respected public health official in a moment where more than 220,000 Americans have died of Covid-19 and the virus continues to rampage across the nation. Fauci, unlike the president,
