We left our spot after breakfast and started driving up the coast — looking for a spot to stay for a few days. I was laughing as I had turned down a coastal trip — and yet here I was — on the coast.
Dialogue can feel “false” when it contains two characters who move through an argument, going back and forth like a good tennis match. Real dialogue is rarely like that. Misunderstandings, “prepared” speeches, and interruptions abound. You can make your dialogue richer by including these elements.

Who are your characters talking to? Are they “performing” to a speaker, or are they speaking like they’re the only ones there? Pay attention to how people talk to each other in life. You’ll realize that people don’t often listen to the other person and respond to them, but rather retort with a canned phrase — merely waiting for their turn to speak. This is especially evident in discussions with groups of people.

While Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Puppet are still widely used to manage cloud infrastructure, the support for Kubernetes-managed cloud services suggests a huge shift towards organizations making Kubernetes the focal point of their cloud infrastructure. The upside here is that developers can now use the same tools to manage Kubernetes applications and other cloud services using the Kubernetes APIs, potentially simplifying the workflow. However, this tight coupling of Kubernetes and the rest of your cloud workloads may not be desired depending on your current infrastructure workflow or Kubernetes expertise.
What makes good dialogue? The answer largely depends on the type of story you are telling (remember your genre). If you’re writing “realist” fiction, your dialogue should sound similar to how real people talk. If you’re writing a “tale” or allegorical fiction, your characters may function as mouthpieces for ideas rather than sound like “real people.”

When you have dialogue, you know you are in a scene. So put your characters in physical space. They have bodies, remember, so what are they doing with them? Are they smoking? Drinking something? Are they sitting or pacing through the room? What are they doing with their hands? Smiling? Frowning? Do they have any physical tics when they speak? Remember, a lot of our communication is nonverbal.
One highlight of this camping spot was that we saw some of the Perseid meteor showers. Another was being woken at sunrise by a murder of crows who were sitting in and on our camp chairs!
The key is to understand what story you are telling and make it consistent throughout. Don’t create a character who starts speaking in short, simple sentences and then starts delivering lofty, elevated speeches.
