We knew this moment was approaching. We saw it coming (and even supported it) when San Francisco enacted its baseless Co

on the horizon is the Imagination Age, those entrepreneurs living today classified as “ahead of their time” relate to their fellow entrepreneurs still stuck in the Information Age as would we, if transported, relate to the inhabitants of the Industrial Age.

Per the regional stay-at-home order’s text: “All gatherings with members of other households are prohibited” and “residents in affected regions must stay home or at their place of residence except as necessary to conduct activities associated with the operation, maintenance, or usage of critical infrastructure.”

Thank you to all the nice folks who have shared their development experiences online, including DevOps Directive, Attila Vágó, David Fekke, and many others who I have linked to above.

Critiquing headlines is a curious past-time. Some of the best pieces of writing have the most cringe-worthy headlines you’ve ever read. Like, How to Lose Weight in 4 Easy Steps. That story changed my life. I cried like a blubbering idiot after reading that story. Thank god for its mediocre headline, or I would have never looked at physical exercise the way I do now.

We can’t rely on spell and grammar checkers to find these mistakes since their usage can be tricky. We have to dig into the work to find them when we proofread. While some of these words are used so interchangeably they are moving into common usage, we have an obligation to our readers to use precise language that ensures clarity and truly expresses our ideas.

Writing is a process that starts with planning and ends with proofreading, which, for some of us, is the most challenging step. It’s hard to proofread our own work because by the time we get to this step, we have edited and revised the piece multiple times. We are so familiar with it that we no longer can see mistakes. The solution is to let the final revision get cold, so we see it with fresh eyes. Even then, some types of errors can still slip by us. The common culprits are homophones — sneaky words that sound the same, but have different meanings and may have different spellings.

And nobody cares. A reader doesn’t read your work because of your status. They read your work because it’s helpful or because someone suggested they should, thanks to the gorgeous function of a social media share.

In a nutshell: This newfangled shutdown will help us ride out this last Covid-19 surge before widespread vaccinations hopefully begin, as noted by Breed and other public health officials noted in today’s press conference. A few weeks of isolation and strict social distancing will help keep our hospitals and health care centers from becoming overwhelmed — and save countless lives in the process.

Outdoor activities, like exercising and individual social distant strolling, are permitted; retailers, grocery stores, bodegas, and similar businesses can still operate indoor activities under reduced capacities. But all gatherings of any sort are strictly forbidden, as is nonessential travel. (We’re assuming this means SFMTA will soon announce a pause on issuing parking tickets, much like the organization did during March’s SIP.)

It’s worth mentioning that this mandate doesn’t dictate against people leaving their residences for essential services, grocery shopping, and to partake in outdoor activities — so long as they do not engage in any interaction with “any number of persons from any other household.”

This month my views across social media are at an all-time low. It’s a social media winter with all the doom and gloom of a health crisis and an economy that has been beaten worse than Mike Tyson. Still, it’s going to be a good month financially. Why? Because I am making money through multiple different sources — courses, books, investing, 9–5 job — and these relationships are getting deeper.

In addition to homophones, some words are used interchangeably when they have different meanings. They can trip up the best, most professional writer since either our brains trick us into assuming the words are correct when they aren’t, or we don’t grasp the nuances of their meanings.

Views don’t make you money. You can have 50 views of an email you wrote and have it lead to 25 sales, which make you $5000. The volume of views is a form of vanity metrics. Vanity metrics make you vain, not money.

“Today is a really tough day,” San Francisco Mayor London Breed said during an announcement Friday before ironing out the facts supporting the decision to establish the mandate early. “Our hospitalization rates are rising locally, especially in our ICU right now. And just as importantly, hospitalizations are rising everywhere, so if we run out of beds, there won’t be another county that can help us.”

“We know that San Francisco isn’t at that trigger point yet,” Breed continued. “But that doesn’t mean we should wait to act… If you’re not staying ahead of this virus, you’re falling behind very quickly. We know if we wait, we are just delaying the inevitable. If we [wait for] one or two weeks, it will just mean our numbers will be higher.”
