In an interview, Tyler Lastovich, head of strategy for Generated Media, told me that the company built the Anonymizer after he was “personally approached on LinkedIn by someone using a Generated photo as their avatar” and after the company saw “many, many more [of its photos used as profile images] on Twitter.” Others have attempted to create tools that use A.I. to obscure the identities of protestors and activists online by subtly altering their profile photos. But Clearview told the New York Times that these tools do not work to trick its systems. A totally fake photo like the ones created by Generated Media would likely be a safer solution.
In this estimation, we will not be focusing so much on our Bayesian workflow and using all the good practices that we learned in the last post. But don’t worry, we will get back to it in the future. The reason behind it is our intention of showing that the MLE and the MAP are indeed the same thing, if we use flat priors. We will be using very vague priors (not actually flat, to help our sampler slightly).
Next time you find yourself managing a ton of state for a form, see if you and get away without using Javascript at all for managing state, and instead use HTML forms and your router of choice.
Indeed, the Ubuntu developers have done a great job! A bug with Wi-Fi has been fixed, the application manager now works correctly, the display resolution was detected properly, and the system’s responsiveness seems to have increased remarkably. The background picture has also changed. In general, it all looks quite stylish.
And here we have our parameters. For now, focus only on the columns mean and sd from the table above. As you can see, we have posterior distributions for our parameters μ_1 and σ_ε², not only a point estimate. Let’s compare our results with the ones that we got from our implementation using statsmodel.
This version, at the time of writing this article, had the status “latest development release with nine months of support, until July 2021.” That means this is not the final release. But in comparison with what it was, it will definitely not be worse.

Let’s follow the same approach that we did in the last post. But first, we need to compare our Bayesian estimation of the parameters with the frequentist approach that we used earlier. Remember that we can solely compare pointwise estimations since only the Bayesian framework produces posterior distributions.

At this point, I decided to stop testing version 20.04. I have no desire to recommend a version that has a lot of bugs and is twice as slow as the standard Raspbian version.
The fake photos, Generated Media says, should look enough like you that contacts will find them believable. But because they’re not actually you, if Clearview or another facial recognition company adds your fake face to its database, it won’t be able to use the fake face to find the real you. Generated Media says users can swap out their photos for new fakes “at least every day” for an extra measure of anonymity.
Just a quick note on the parameter σ_ε². We’ve been estimating the variance of the ε_t term. Nevertheless, when fitting our likelihood, we are using the most usual way to fit a Gaussian distribution with the mean and the standard deviation. That is why I created a Deterministic variable (nothing to do with our deterministic model), which is the way to keep track of a transformed variable in PyMC3.
