The wife of the Belgian ambassador to South Korea who was caught slapping a shop clerk in the city of Seoul did not seem to want to be prosecuted. That was after he asked for diplomatic immunity to avoid being charged, local police said.

The Belgian Ambassador to South Korea, Peter Lescouhier, has apologized to the public for his wife's actions.

The slapping, carried out by Lescouhier's wife, Xiang Xueqiu, was caught on CCTV cameras. The video has gone public and angered a group of people in South Korea.

Moreover, it is currently suspected that Xiang could claim diplomatic immunity to avoid investigations
Prior to the incident, the female employee was said to want to confirm whether some of the clothes lying in her shop belonged to Xueqiu.

He was also worried that Xueqiu had stolen clothes from his shop.
The incident took place on April 9 at a clothing store in the Yongsan-gu area, Seoul.

At that time Xiang tried on some clothes for about an hour, before finally leaving the shop, according to several media reports in South Korea.

A shop staff then followed Xiang to make sure the ambassador's wife had bought the clothes she was wearing.

Xiang reportedly followed the employee back to the shop. In the confrontation that was caught on camera, Xiang was seen pushing and slapping another staff member who tried to intervene.

"I didn't know who the woman was when I was attacked, but she looked confident and unrepentant," said the employee who was slapped by Xiang.

The shop clerk's cheeks were swollen as a result of Xiang's slapping.
In his official statement, Lescouhier said he sincerely regretted the incident. He wanted to apologize on behalf of his wife.

"No matter what the situation was at that time, my wife's reaction was unacceptable," said Lescouhier.

The Belgian Embassy in Seoul said Xiang was currently in hospital recovering from a stroke.

Xiang is said to have not been able to fulfill the police summons because he is undergoing medical recovery from the stroke he suffered last week.

"We hope that his health improves quickly, so he can immediately assist the police investigation and we can all forget about this regrettable incident," said Lescouhier.

Korean Air deputy chairman dismissed due to 'splashing water' incident
Korean Air has temporarily suspended one of its leaders for allegedly pouring water on the head of an advertising company, police said.

The vice president of Korea Airlines, Cho Hyun-min, is the younger brother of one of the airline's leaders who is currently serving a prison sentence for the 'peanut incident'.

"Korean Air has temporarily suspended Cho Hyun-min from his job since April 16 until awaiting the results of a police investigation," the airline's official statement said, Reuters news agency reported.
Cho, known as Emily Cho's nickname, apologized last Sunday for her "stupid habit".
The act of splashing water on someone's face in South Korea can count as physical assault. Two years ago, a housewife was fined US $ 650 or Rp.8.9 million for throwing water in the face of a housing broker during negotiations.

It was reported that Cho took this action because he didn't like the attitude of the head of the advertising company.

The union demanded that Cho resign
Previously, Cho had faced pressure from the airline's labor union to step down from his post after the media reported the incident.

The association of airline employees and pilots said Cho's actions had damaged the company's reputation, so they demanded that he be fired and apologized.
A petition related to this incident has also been filed and continues to receive support from the Korean public, the AFP news agency reported.

In essence, the petition demanded that Cho be fired and the airline was asked to remove the word "Korea" from its company name.

In its official statement, Korea Airlines said Cho did not pour water from a bottle on someone's face, but poured it on the floor. And according to him, what happened was not during an official meeting.

Cho, in an interview with TV station MBC, denied allegations that he threw water from a glass on someone, but only spilled it on the floor.

However, he admitted his actions were "stupid".
The bean incident
In 2014, Cho's older brother, Cho Hyun-ah, became the media spotlight after he asked a Korean Airlines flight attendant in a first-class cabin to be removed from the plane for not serving peanuts on a plate.

As a result, the flight departure from New York to Incheon airport, South Korea, was delayed by about 20 minutes.

Both, Cho Hyun-min and Cho Hyun-ah, are the biological children of the owner of Korea Airlines, Cho Yang-ho.
