Calls for urgent business support

More political leaders are calling for support packages for businesses around Geelong, Surf Coast and Victoria-wide to be made available as soon as possible as many struggle to stay afloat during the state's 4th lockdown.

Torquay based Justice Party MP Stuart Grimley said the unknown is the worst part for owners.

"...Not knowing if the Government will provide financial support; if they do provide financial support what will it be; how will they access it; the list of worries goes on and on," he said.

"Many casual employees rely heavily on their weekly wages.

Losing a weeks’ worth of wages can be detrimental to lower income and at-risk households and can sometimes mean choosing between putting food on the table or paying rent."

Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien echoed the calls, saying many businesses cannot afford to wait.

"They are on their knees," he said.

"(They have) gone through hell last year, they were locked down in Febreuary and now they've been locked down again.

They need to know what you can do for compensation for them know - they have staff that are living day by day."

But Acting Premier James Merlino said work is underway on a tailored support and an announcement will be made in coming days.

"Treasurer Tim Pallas is engaging with Josh Frydenberg at a federal level, so there is engagement between the state and federal government in terms of what support the federal government might provide,” Mr Merlino said after the lockdown was announced.
