Running late for a meeting? Worried you would miss your appointment? Scared of missing your train or flight? In these instances, many of us end up ignoring traffic rules and regulations. You might end up overspeeding, or jumping a red light. You may even drive recklessly, forget to wear your seatbelt or carry all the vehicle documents such as insurance card, vehicle RC details, Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate. While this might save you a few seconds, the bigger picture shows that the repercussions of these actions are immense. You can put your life, your co-passenger’s life, or the lives of people on the road in danger. You can also end up damaging personal as well as public property, and be in direct violation of the laws laid down by the government of India. Thus, to ensure that people take traffic laws and regulations seriously, and to avoid the above mentioned catastrophes, the central government formulated the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The act depicts the traffic directives and rules that all citizens of India must abide by, as vehicle owners and pedestrians. Further, to make sure that these laws are diligently followed, the Act also relays the punishments and fines that one may be subjected to, should they flout these rules and regulations.
While many times the traffic police catches hold of offenders and issues a challan on the spot, there may be instances where you may receive your challan later. These days, the traffic police notifies the offenders with their challans via SMS on their registered mobile number. But since technology is prone to errors, sometimes these notifications and intimations do not reach the offender on time, which may lead to them paying a hefty fine, or even serving time in prison, for delayed e-challan payment. So, it is important that you should keep a check on your pending e-challans, and pay your dues as soon as possible.
The good news is that the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has embraced digitization by bringing forth the ParivahanSewa website. The website allows people to avail all services that are offered by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) online, such as paying their challans, renewing their vehicular documents, applying for different permits, etc. On the website, to check your pending e-challans, you simply need to enter your vehicle number, or the last 5 digits of the chassis number, or the last 5 digits of your engine number along with the captcha code. You can also check the status of your challans if you have the challan number with you. Once you enter this information, you can check details which will show if any challans are pending against the said vehicle. It will also show you data such as date of the offence, time and place of the offence, along with pictorial proof. The website also offers you the option to pay the challan on the spot online, with the option of ‘Pay Now’ right next to the details. You can then carry out the online transaction, make your e-challan payment and obtain the receipt for the same.
