Public and private banks to remain closed for more than 10 days in May: Find out dates and reasons

It is just that banks will remain closed due to various public holidays along with the weekly offs. In May, banks will not open for 11 days.
Already banks are functioning under 50 per cent employees strength due to rising cases of COVID-19. As per the new guidelines, banks will also operate from 10 am to 2 pm. With 11 holidays, banks can be seen under pressure during the days it functions. On May 7, banks in Jammu and Kashmir to remain closed due to Jumat Ul vida.

Banks will also remain closed on the first and fourth Saturdays in May.

There will up to 12 days of bank holiday in May 2021 across India. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a calendar with the dates the banks will remain shut.

As per the new guidelines issued by the Indian Banks' Association, bank branches can operate from 10 am to 2 pm due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Usually, both private and public banks remain shut on all national or public holidays, several festivals as well as the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

Even though each state has its own set of holidays, as per the RBI, banks in most states will remain shut on May 14 on account of Eid-Ul-Fitr.

The RBI puts its holiday list under three brackets - Real Time Gross Settlement Holiday, Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act, and Banks' Closing of Accounts. The bank holidays are listed by the Central government, state governments, and union territories (UTs) under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

Bank holidays in May 2021: Banks to remain shut for 12 days this month; check details here

Banks in the country will remain shut for 12 days including weekends in the month of May. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, available on its official website, displays five festive holidays. Along with this, other holidays include the five Sundays of the month, second and fourth Saturdays.

As per the RBI website, the first holiday will be on Saturday, 1 May for Maharashtra Day/ May Day/Labour Day in select cities.

The second bank holiday will be on Friday, 7 May to mark the occasion of Jumat-ul-Vida (the last Friday of Ramzan).

The third holiday of the month is going to be on Thursday, 13 May on the festival of Eid-Ul-Fitr while Friday, 14 May will be an off because of several festivals including Bhagvan Shree Parshuram Jayanti/ Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya.

Wednesday, 26 May is also going to be a bank holiday to mark Buddha Purnima.

Weekly offs will be on five Sundays — 2 May, 9 May, 16 May, 23 May, and 30 May, and two Saturdays — 8 May and 22 May.

The United Forum of Bank Unions has asked for reducing working hours for banks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have suggested that working with limited staff and from home should also be considered. The forum has requested that for the next four to six months, physical banking should be restricted. It has demanded that a five-day work week should be implemented in banks. The forum has also suggested that instead of opening all the branches, banks can operate a few branches during the pandemic.

The Assembly elections in four states Kerala, West Bengal, Assam and Tamil Nadu and the UT of Puducherry will come to an end on 2 May with the Election Commission set to begin counting of votes at 8 am tomorrow.

While polling was conducted in a single phase on 6 April in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry. Assam voted in three phases between 27 March and 6 April while voting in West Bengal was held in eight phases between 27 March and 29 April. By-elections to Lok Sabha seats as well as Assembly seats in other states were also held during the period.

The result of the general elections to the five legislative assemblies, as well as bye-elections, will be declared tomorrow.

As reported earlier, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued clear instructions that entry of polling agents and candidates will not be permitted inside the counting hall without a negative COVID-19 RT PCR report or Rapid Antigen Test within 48 hours of the start of counting or vaccination certificate for both doses.

The winning candidate can be accompanied by not more than two people. EC has also prohibited victory rallies.

What time are the results expected?

However, according to a report in NDTV, final results are expected to be declared by 5 pm.

The West Bengal Assembly election results might take time to be declared as the voting process was completed in eight phases.

All the four states, and the UT of Puducherry, which went to polls over more than one month, have different winning margins due to the different strengths of their legislative assemblies.
