#Top_United Airlines passengers, pedestrians recall horror of watching engine rain debris

Eyewitnesses in the air and on the ground said they were shocked when parts of the jet engine exploded and panicked and broke into the house as it left Denver.

Although there were no reports of injuries or deaths in Saturday's crash in Roomroom, Colorado, residents and passengers told ABC News that they were still confused.

“It was on the line over,‘ Hey, all right? ’That’s not normal,” Brett Guy, who was aboard United Flight 3228, told ABC News. "I didn't know what to think."

The right Boeing 7 777-200 engine failed after taking off at 1 a.m. Saturday for a flight from Denver to Honolulu, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Parts of the engine began to come out of it as it was engulfed in flames, and fell to the ground between the wreckage. 

The boy heard a boom from him and the other passengers and saw the engine coming out of their windows.

"The plane was shaking so hard," he recalled. "It didn't stop, and no one really knew. And then you looked out the window."

Broomfield resident Tiller Thal told ABC News he was walking with his family in the evening when the engine exploded. Thal said he and his family were frightened when they heard the explosion and saw the lights.

He raised more concerns about the passengers as he watched the jet continue to fly with the fuel on fire. 

"It's nothing like anything we've ever seen. So it was awesome for my daughter, my wife, and I [were] just worried, we know that plane is full of people," Thal said.

Thal said he was hoping the plane could do it safely with the remaining engine.

Guy also had a similar thought while sitting on the plane after recalling a moment from the 1986 Tom Top Cruise movie “Top Gun”.

"There's the part where it looks like, one machine is out. And then it looks like, 'I'm shutting it down,'" remember. "And for some reason, in my head, I was thinking, 'We're OK with one machine, but this is something confusing.'"

The plane returned to Denver International Airport, and all 231 passengers and 10 crew left without major injuries, according to the FAA.

Engine debris, however, caused extensive damage to homes and roads below. Large parts of the plan, including the metal cover, fell on the roofs, sidewalks and trees.

Kirby Clement told ABC News that he was at home with his wife. They rushed to the front window and appeared after seeing a huge round piece of fuel spinning.

“The engine cooler was placed here and hung on a tree branch,” he said. "He dropped and dropped a square on my truck bed in the corner of my garage. He fell and fell and ended up with my wife and I was sitting there, 'What's that?'

Clement said the damage was "terrible."

“If anyone was there, he was seriously injured or killed,” he said. "I mean ... the top of the truck is next to the cab of the truck."
