Biden allows Trump ban on temporary foreign workers to expire

President Joe Biden allowed a proclamation from his Republican predecessor that had blocked many temporary foreign workers from coming into the United States to expire on Wednesday, according to a related court filing on Thursday.

The Democratic president has rolled back some of former President Donald Trump's immigration policies since taking office on Jan. 20 including last month revoking a proclamation that had blocked many immigrant visa applicants from entering the United States. Trump first issued his directive on temporary foreign workers in June 2020 and renewed it through March 31 before leaving office, portraying it as necessary to protect American workers amid high unemployment during the coronavirus pandemic.
A longtime Associated Press political reporter in Hawaii, whose exploits prompted the governor at the time to declare the day he retired “Bruce Dunford Day,” has died.

His son Terrence Dunford said his father died in his sleep Friday at a care home near Honolulu.

Earlier, Vice President Harris addressed a virtual gathering of the Covid-19 Community Corps, a coalition launched by the Biden administration to encourage coronavirus vaccinations.

The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is urging President Biden to pick a Latina nominee, Lola Velazquez-Aguilu, for U.S. attorney in Minnesota, a move they say would show his commitment to diversity. It would also elevate a lawyer working on the prosecution of the officers charged with killing George Floyd to a powerful role.

“Hispanics are the most underrepresented minority group in the federal workforce, making up just 8 percent of personnel,” CHC chairman Raul Ruiz, a Democrat from southern California, wrote in a letter sent to Biden last month and obtained by The Washington Post. “To help the Biden-Harris administration increase Hispanic representation across the workforce, I wish to bring to your attention Ms. Lola Velazquez-Aguilu.”

Biden has begun to nominate judges and U.S. attorneys, with an emphasis so far on racial and gender diversity; the vast majority of former president Donald Trump’s nominees for those jobs were White men. More nominations could come any time before the Senate returns this month, and it’s common for members of Congress to recommend candidates.

By pushing for Velazquez-Aguilu, Hispanic Democrats are also intervening in a family feud among Minnesota Democrats. In February, Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, both Democrats, announced a committee to recommend an appointee for the District of Minnesota. Last month, three names of potential candidates leaked to local reporters: Velazquez-Aguilu, a former assistant U.S. attorney; Surya Saxena, another former assistant U.S. attorney; and former U.S. attorney Andrew Luger, who served during former president Barack Obama’s second term.

The leak sparked controversy in Minneapolis, with some liberals asking how Luger, a partner at Jones Day, a firm that represented Trump’s 2020 campaign, could be picked. Luger held a fundraiser for Klobuchar’s unsuccessful presidential bid, worrying liberals who thought that might give him an advantage, even though the senator had removed herself from the process; in 2017, she had unsuccessfully urged Trump to keep Luger in his job.

Luger also attracted opposition from Muslim activists, who had opposed the Countering Violent Extremism program he oversaw in 2015, arguing it was discriminatory.

Ruiz’s letter, written on behalf of the CHC, did not mention the potential competition, instead touting Velazquez-Aguilu’s record as a prosecutor and her pro bono assistance on the Floyd case. If confirmed, Velazquez-Aguilu would be the first Latina to hold the U.S. attorney’s office in Minnesota.

“Hispanic communities are not monolithic, and it is important to the CHC that diverse and qualified Hispanic candidates who understand these nuances be considered for administration positions,” Ruiz wrote. “In order to truly reflect the diversity of America, it is imperative that Hispanics account for about 20 percent of representation across all levels of the federal government.”

He was 79. Dunford reported for the AP for 37 years, including more than two decades covering Hawaii politics.

A tongue-in-cheek proclamation then-Gov. Linda Lingle issued upon his 2004 retirement said he would be “forever known as the Capitol Jester” for his puns, jokes and put-downs.

Dunford is survived by his wife of 56 years, four sons, four grandchildren and a sister.
Reuters and other outlets reported the planned move earlier in the week. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Amtrak is planning a major expansion of passenger rail service through Cleveland and Ohio, part of the massive infrastructure investment outlined by President Joseph R. Biden this week.

If implemented, passenger rail service through Cleveland could jump from the current four trains per day to 22, according to All Aboard Ohio, a lobbying group that advocates for expanded train service in the state.

“You may even see trains coming through in the daylight,” joked Stu Nicholson, the executive director of All Aboard Ohio. Currently, all four trains that stop in Cleveland – all traveling between Chicago and the East Coast – arrive between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Included in the Amtrak proposal: new service between Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati, a route that passenger rail advocates have long desired.

Also included in the plan: new service between Cleveland and Detroit, plus expanded service to Toledo, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, New York City and more.

And across the U.S., Amtrak is proposing new and expanded service in every region, including Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Nevada and elsewhere.

It’s not at all clear how the proposal will fare in Congress. Sp
