Four new areas to get door-to-door surge testing - full list of postcodes

More areas in Greater Manchester, Norfolk, Southampton and Surrey will get surge testing in addition to existing extensive testing, and in combination with following the current lockdown rules.
More areas in Greater Manchester along with postcodes in Norfolk, Southampton and Surrey will get surge testing in addition to existing extensive testing, and in combination with following the current lockdown rules.

Additional measures will target areas within Norfolk (IP22 postcode), Southampton (SO15) and Woking, Surrey (GU22) where the COVID-19 variant first identified in South Africa has been found.

Following the start of surge testing in Manchester last week, testing in Manchester will be expanded to targeted areas within the M40 and M9 postcode districts.

People living within these targeted areas are strongly encouraged to take a COVID-19 test this week, whether they are showing symptoms or not.

People with symptoms should book a test in the usual way, and those without symptoms should visit their local authority website for more information.

It comes as the UK grapples with the emergence of yet another new strain of coronavirus, as officials confirm a Nigerian variant has arrived.

Health authorities have been trying to curb the spread of a range of new variants in the new year with testing blitzes.

The country reeled at the impact of the Kent strain that first emerged in England's south east shortly before Christmas, before it ripped through London and the rest of the UK.

The highly-virulent 'UK strain' has since been found all over the world.
And in recent weeks, the UK Government launched a border crackdown in a bid to keep out a South African variant that has been popping up around the UK.

The new strain first discovered in Nigeria, also known as B.1.525, has been classed as a variant under investigation in the UK.

Meanwhile, more mutations of the original coronavirus first found in Wuhan, China, and of the Kent strain have been discovered too.

Boris Johnson has stopped short of vowing England's third lockdown would be its last because of the ongoing mutations.
The Prime Minister warned that the mutations meant that he could not promise never to tighten restrictions again, as he works on a road-map for exiting lockdown.
Mutations are a natural part of the life of all viruses - not just the novel coronavirus.

But experts closely monitor changes to dangerous bugs like Covid-19 which has killed more than 2.4million worldwide, and over 118,000 in the UK.

The mutations must be investigated as some strains spread more easily, and there are fears some could prove more deadly or become resistant to vaccines.
