GOP chair apologizes for calling Whitmer, others witches

Michigan Republican Chairman Ron Weiser has apologized for comments calling the three highest-ranking elected female leaders in the state “witches” who should be “ready for the burning at the stake.”

The comments Weiser made during an event Thursday in Oakland County about Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson came in addition to others raising the idea of “assassination” in reference to U.S. Reps. Fred Upton and Peter Meijer, two Republicans who voted in favor of impeaching former President Donald Trump.

“In an increasingly vitriolic political environment, we should all do better to treat each other with respect, myself included. I fell short of that the other night,” Weiser said in a statement Saturday.

“I apologize to those I offended for the flippant analogy about three women who are elected officials and for the off-hand comments about two other leaders. I have never advocated for violence and never will. While I will always fight for the people and policies I believe in, I pledge to be part of a respectful political dialogue going forward,” Weiser said.

Whitmer spokesman Bobby Leddy said while Weiser "had an opportunity to retract his remarks and publicly apologize, he instead doubled down on the same repulsive and divisive rhetoric that so many Michiganders are tired of hearing.”

Jake Rollow, a spokesman for Benson, said "the people of Michigan deserve more than a half-apology when the leader of one of our two major political parties suggests violence over democracy.”

Weiser also holds an elected seat on the University of Michigan Board of Regents. School President Mark Schlissel released a statement saying Weiser's set of remarks “does not represent the values or beliefs of the University of Michigan. I condemn any suggestion of violence against a duly elected state or federal official.”

“Such words are particularly abhorrent in a climate where so recently the use of language has engendered violence and attempted violence directed at elected officials, our democratic institutions, and the individuals who guard them. It is never appropriate to raise the specter of assassination or perpetuate misogynistic stereotypes against anyone in any setting. Elected officials must adhere to a higher standard regardless of the context of their remarks,” Schlissel said.

Four members of the board have called on Weiser to resign from the body, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Members of the Board of Regents are elected by Michigan voters on a statewide ballot.

Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that a major disaster exists for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and ordered federal aid to supplement the Tribe’s efforts in the areas affected by the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic beginning on January 20, 2020, and continuing.

The President’s action makes federal funding available for Crisis Counseling for the Poarch Band of Creek Indians.

Federal funding is also available to the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and certain private nonprofit organizations for emergency protective measures, including direct federal assistance, for the entire Tribe impacted by COVID-19.

Robert J. Fenton, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, named Gracia B. Szczech as the Federal Coordinating Officer for federal recovery operations in the affected areas.

Additional designations may be made at a later date if requested by the Tribe and warranted by the results of further assessments.

Eric Trump said if he or his older brother, Don Jr., lied on a federal form as Hunter Biden allegedly did in paperwork to buy a pistol — which is the subject of a controversial incident involving the Secret Service — they would be jailed for life.

Eric Trump was asked by Fox host Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures” about the allegations swirling around President Biden’s son and the gun that turned up missing in 2018 — and his involvement in business dealings in China and Ukraine, as reported by The Post last October.

“Obviously, Hunter is a troubled kid, right? There’s no question about that. But if that was Don or I, or if that was anybody in the Trump family, and we lied on a federal form, we’d be in jail for the rest of our lives. We really would be,” former President Donald Trump’s son told Bartiromo.

“And it’s amazing. There’s no one even, there’s no one even talking about that. He lied on multiple questions. It wasn’t just the drug question. He lied on multiple questions,” he said.

“And I think a lot of people, Maria, in this country are sick and tired of the unequal scales of justice,” Eric Trump said.

Asked on the gun purchase transaction receipt whether he was an “unlawful user of, or addicted to, marijuana or any depressant, stimulant, narcotic drug, or any other controlled substance?” he answered: “No,” Politico reported.

But five years earlier he had been discharged from the Navy Reserve after testing positive for cocaine and he and other Biden family members have been open about his history of drug abuse.

The gun purchase came to light in the report that the Secret Service allegedly intervened after Hunter’s then-girlfriend and former sister-in-law Hallie took the .38-caliber pistol and tossed it in the trash because she believed he was going to kill himself with it.

At the time, Hunter was divorced from his first wife, Kathleen, and was involved with Hallie, the widow of his brother Beau, who died of cancer in 2015.

Eric Trump told Bartiromo that he and his brother are both gun enthusiasts.

“We’re shooters. We’re big advocates of the Second Amendment. You have to sign a form called – it’s called a 4473. The first question is, are you actually the legal buyer of this firearm? And you check yes, right?,” he said.

“But the second question is, have you ever been dishonorably discharged from the military? He obviously lied about that point. Then the third question is, are you under the use of any illegal banned substances, including X, Y and Z? They list a lot of drugs. He lied on that question,” Eric Trump added.

The Secret Service has denied any involvement.

But emails found on Hunter’s hard drive obtained by The Post from the contents of a laptop he left at a Wilmington, Del., repair shop in April 2019 contradicts their claims​.​
