Republicans legislators order audit of Wisconsin election

Many area legislators are pushing bills meant to hamper the effectiveness of gun control measures President Joe Biden proposed during his campaign.

Senate File 81 is sponsored by Sen. Anthony Bouchard (R-Cheyenne) and co-sponsored by, among others, Sen. Tim French (R-Powell), and Reps. Rachel Rodriguez-Williams (R-Powell), John Winter (R-Thermopolis) and Dan Laursen (R-Powell).

“This is an attempt by our Legislature to get ahead of what we are pretty sure the Biden administration is going to do relative to gun confiscation,” Winter said. “We are focused on preserving our Second Amendment rights for the citizens of this great state.”

SF 81 states, in part, that “the Legislature is firmly resolved to support and defend the constitution of the United States against every aggression, whether foreign or domestic, and is duty-bound to oppose every infraction of those principles that constitute the basis of the United States because only a faithful observance of those principles can secure the union’s existence and the public happiness.”

“If the federal government assumes powers that the people did not grant it in the Constitution of the United States, its acts are unauthoritative, void and of no force.”

Rodriguez-Williams said she hopes the measure reaches the floor of the House because “it’s impressive and it has teeth.”

“If passed, this bill would nullify federal gun control laws by requiring that Wyoming peace officers only enforce gun laws passed by the Wyoming legislature,” she said.
Microsoft on Thursday urged the US government to adopt a law similar to a controversial Australian proposal that would require tech giants to pay publishers for news. 

Despite Bing's current limited reach, he said, “with a realistic prospect of gaining usage share, we are confident we can build the service Australians want and need.”

The Australian proposal is now before a parliamentary committee. It would allow media companies to request payment from tech giants for news articles posted on their platforms, and subject Google and Facebook to mandatory price arbitration if an agreement on payments to media companies can't be reached. 

Google and Facebook have argued publishers benefit from including their links on the platforms, taking readers directly to publishers' websites, though news organizations say the lion's share of online ad revenue is going to the tech giants.

In January, under then- President Trump , assistant US trade representatives Daniel Bahar and Karl Ehlers asked the Australian government to “suspend” the plans.

“The US Government is concerned that an attempt, through legislation, to regulate the competitive positions of specific players ... to the clear detriment of two US firms, may result in harmful outcomes,” they said in the document, under the letterhead of the Executive Office of the President,  according to Reuters . 

A spokesperson for the Biden White House was not immediately available for comment when asked if the administration is open to embracing a proposal similar to Australia's.
A man authorities say is a leader of the far-right Oath Keepers militia group and led other extremists in the attack on the U.S. Capitol discussed the possibility of getting a boat to ferry “heavy weapons” across the Potomac River, prosecutors said Thursday.

Court papers filed in the case against Thomas Caldwell provide chilling new evidence in the plot on Capitol Hill as Democrats prosecuting Donald Trump’s impeachment made their case to convict the former president for inciting the violence.

The details come days after Caldwell’s lawyer said the man — who authorities said holds a leadership position in the extremist group — had a top-secret security clearance for decades and previously worked for the FBI. The FBI has not answered questions about the lawyer’s claim and Caldwell’s lawyer has not responded to multiple messages.
Prosecutors said Caldwell sent a text message to someone believed to be affiliated with the Three Percenters, an anti-government movement, on Jan. 3 about the possibility of sending weapons across the river.

“How many people either in the militia or not (who are still supportive of our efforts to save the Republic) have a boat on a trailer that could handle a Potomac crossing?” Caldwell wrote, according to prosecutors. “If we had someone standing by at a dock ramp (one near the Pentagon for sure) we could have our Quick Response Team with the heavy weapons standing by, quickly load them and ferry them across the river to our waiting arms.”

Prosecutors revealed the evidence to make the case that Caldwell should remain locked up while he awaits trial.

Authorities also said that during a search of Caldwell’s home, they also found a “Death List” that included the name of an elected official from another state. Investigators also found invoices for more than $750 worth of live ammunition and what appeared to be a gun designed to look like a cellphone, prosecutors said.
