The Hermione: The Statue of Liberty of the sea dynamometrical

And not since the Statue of Liberty has there been such an imposing -- or stately -- symbol of the enduring relationship between France and the United States as the Hermione.

The three-masted sailing frigate is an oak and iron reminder of the more than two centuries of close and often passionate relations between the U.S. and France.

It took 17 years and $30 million in donations to build a precise recreation of the ship that was used by the Marquis de Lafayette to come to the aid of George Washington as he and the colonialists fought for their freedom.

The French nobleman, less than 20 years old at the time, was inspired by the stories of the struggle for independence of the new Americans and wanted to join in their fight against British rule.

In 1777 he sailed across the Atlantic with weapons and an offer of his services to Washington. The two men immediately struck up a friendship and Lafayette, who was wounded in the Battle of Brandywine, stayed by Washington's side throughout the miserable winter at Valley Forge.

The following year he traveled back to France to gather men and support, returning with 300 soldiers aboard the Hermione -- the beginnings of a French expeditionary force which eventually numbered more than 6,000 and was crucial in winning the battle of Yorktown which led to the final defeat of the British.

At a gala reception for the modern Hermione Tuesday, the spirit of Washington and Lafayette was revived -- two men, as one organizer put it, who 'shared the common language of liberty.'

Christophe Navarre, the President of Moet Hennessey, one of the main benefactors of the Hermione project, reminded the audience of senators, congressmen and supreme court justices that Lafayette was a 'hero two worlds,' having fought in the both the American and French Revolutions.

With the replica ship at anchor just off shore of Washington's estate at Mount Vernon, Deputy Secretary of State Anthony Blinken told the French and American crowd that the 'reappearance of the Hermione along the coast of America is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on what our countries mean to one another.'

He then went on to list the times France and the U.S. had joined together to do battle against slavery, oppression and, more recently, terrorism and climate change.

The Hermione will sail the coast of the U.S. all summer long, making port calls in Philadelphia, New York and Boston among other places.

If nothing else, a visit to the 65-meter tall ship is a chance to marvel at the naval prowess of the Lafayette era.

Building the reconstruction required 2,000 oak trees, hundreds of thousands of individually forged nails, 22-hundred square meters of sail and a thousand pulleys.

It was such a nimble and speedy ship for the time that when the British captured a sister ship, they made detailed drawings of its construction so as to recreate its most advanced features.

What they could not copy, was how much the Hermione -- then and now -- says about two nations joined by the strength of ideals.
