137,000 people in UK get COVID jab in first week

Nadhim Zahawi, the minister responsible for the jab's deployment, tweeted that it was a "really good start".

In seven days, he said the number of doses administered was:

  •     108,000 in England
  •     7,897 in Wales
  •     4,000 in Northern Ireland
  •     18,000 in Scotland

Live COVID-19 updates from the UK and around the world Mr Zahawi confirmed there had been 137,897 vaccinations given across the UK so far.

"That number will increase as we have operationalised hundreds of PCN (primary care networks)," he added - referencing the rollout due to begin in GPs' surgeries and the promise it will follow in care homes before Christmas.

Wednesday's announcement is the first time specific numbers have been revealed - instead of the assurance that "tens of thousands" of jabs have been administered - and the government has now said it will publish the latest figures weekly.

The majority of the vaccines administered so far have gone to the over-80s, care home workers and NHS staff at more than 70 sites across the country.

In August, he donated £500,000 to fund educational scholarships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Patients require two doses - 21 days apart - for the jab to be fully effective.

The first person in Britain to get a coronavirus jab outside a clinical trial was 90-year-old Margaret Keenan. The grandmother-of-four received it at Coventry's University Hospital at 6.31am last Tuesday. Since then, many others have had the vaccine, including the second patient and first man to receive it in Britain, William Shakespeare, and celebrity chef Prue Leith.

A priority list determines the order for getting the jab and is based mostly on age and increased risk of suffering serious illness from the virus. iPhone factory workers say they haven’t been paid, cause millions in damages. This year, Bezos has committed $10bn to issues related to climate change. In November, he announced the first of those grants, handing out almost $800m to 16 groups.

Worker protests at an iPhone manufacturing plant in India have caused up to $7 million in damages, Reuters reports. Workers at the plant, owned by the Taiwanese-based company Wistron, say they haven't been paid what they were promised and are demanding better working conditions.

The Times of India has several on-the-ground reports and dramatic video of the protests. The news outlet reports, "A majority of the nearly 2,000 employees, who were exiting the facility after completing their night-shift, went on a rampage destroying the company's furniture, assembly units and even attempted to set fire to vehicles."

The Times of India also has details on the salary workers were supposed to be getting, with the report quoting an employee as saying, "While an engineering graduate was promised Rs 21,000 ($286) per month, his/her salary had reduced to Rs 16,000 ($218) and, subsequently, to Rs 12,000 ($163) in the recent months. Non-engineering graduates' monthly salary had reduced to Rs 8,000 ($109). The salary amount being credited to our accounts have been reducing and it was frustrating to see this." Some workers claim to have gotten monthly salaries of as little as Rs 500 ($6.80).
