7 Nighttime Tips for Improving Your Oral Health

Regular 8 hours of sleep can lead to a lot of things, like amazing skin, keep heart disease and stress away and a good mood. However, with all these, you may also have accumulated germs and plaque in your teeth which can include the chances of infection in your mouth. But the fear of this should not keep you from getting healthy amounts of sleep. Along with regular visits to the dentist, there are a few things you can do at home to improve your oral health.

  1. Brush Before Bed

The first step of a nighttime oral health regime is brushing before bed. This helps protect your teeth against plaque buildup, gum disease and tooth decay. Start brushing at a 45-degree angle with shorter strokes for the outer teeth. Once you have done this, you should focus on your inner teeth and molars. To improve your dental health, it is imperative to follow this tip right after dinner.

  1. Never Ignore Flossing

Dental floss removes tiny debris and food particles stuck between your teeth. When ignored, it can lead to the development of tartar deposits, tooth decay and gum disease. Standard toothbrushes are not designed to eliminate anything that gets stuck in between your teeth. Consult your dentist to know the right way to floss.

  1. Use A Toothpaste For Sensitive Teeth

While choosing a toothpaste, look for more important elements than whitening power and flavours like fluoride. Fluoride creates a leading defence against tooth decay. It works by fighting germs that lead to tooth decay and also provides a protective barrier for people suffering from sensitive teeth.

  1. Get An Electric Toothbrush

An electrical toothbrush has a rotating and oscillating head that helps get rid of plaque buildup from your teeth more effectively than a regular toothbrush. Such a toothbrush should be comfortable to hold, easy to use and has soft bristles to that it doesn’t hurt your gums.

  1. Don’t Forget The Tongue

Your tongue can also have plaque buildup. Not only can this lead to bad mouth odour, but it can also lead to other oral health problems like a tongue infection or gum diseases. Consider using a tongue cleaner or the ribbed back of your toothbrush to gently clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth.

  1. Use Mouthwash

Mouthwash is not just for fresh breath. A restorative mouthwash before bed helps keep your teeth free of plaque and cavities and your gums from gingivitis. When coupled with a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, the benefits of mouthwash can be amazing. Most over-the-counter mouthwashes generally do not have any health benefits so consult your dentists about which mouthwash is right for you.

  1. Drink More Water

Water has an uncountable number of health benefits, including oral health. Drinking water post meals can wash out the effects of acidic and sticky foods and drinks, keeping your teeth clean.

Even with all these steps, don’t lag on the visits to your dentist. Regular checkups and cleanings can help you keep your teeth clean and your gums healthy in the long run. Remember, preventive care and maintenance are just as important for a healthy mouth as a good day and nighttime oral hygiene.
