The avalanche of race shifts and moves, creating captives in a society that names whiteness the steward. Whiteness manages to craft the rules, norms, and mores in its image, limiting motion and expression, reasons behind Frederick Douglass not being officially considered a Founding Father of this nation, or Malcolm X not receiving his own nationally recognized holiday.

Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates is the most popular African-American author today, gaining wide readership during his time as national correspondent at The Atlantic, where he wrote about cultural, social, and political issues, particularly regarding African Americans and white supremacy. He has published three non-fiction books: The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me, and We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy.Between the World and Me won the 2015 National Book Award for Nonfiction. He has also written a Black Panther series and a Captain America series for Marvel Comics. In 2015 he received a “Genius Grant” from the MacArthur Foundation. His first novel, The Water Dancer, was published in 2019.

At some point, it sucked up so much power I decided to unplug my laptop to see how fast it would drain the battery. In about two and a half hours, I managed to knock out two-thirds of the computer’s battery life, by which time I had made a point to remove syncing capabilities on every folder with node_modules as a subfolder. It seems on track for about four and a half hours while plugged into a monitor… even after all that.

When my long-distance girlfriend dropped me off at the airport, I sensed it would be the last time we saw each other. We had been dating only five months and had depleted our vacation days, air miles, and cash.

And on top of all that, it’s not fair to criticize Dropbox for having an app that appears to otherwise work fine on a brand-new architecture at a time when around 15% of Intel apps aren’t, according to “Does it ARM.” (And glitches are common; my web browser of choice, Vivaldi, does this on the Twitter website right now.)

Included within Black America’s output is whiteness’s input, allowing whiteness to define the relationship between the creator and the consumer. The relationship’s standards are not Blackness’s invention, yet Blackness is forced to regard it as such, as the eyes of whiteness peek into Black American homes, bending the blinds of our windows to formulate opinions through the slivers.

Neither of us said much during that car ride. After an amazing four days together, we sensed the finality of our situation. Still, I loved her. I had to make a move. “Turn the car around. I’m not going home. Let’s make a life here.”

As President-elect Joe Biden said in an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, “If you have a problem figuring out if you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t Black.”

Instead, we kissed goodbye like couples do when one of them rushes off on a business trip for a few days. On the plane home, my seatmate chatted me up, and we got to talking. It was this conversation that saved our relationship.

Mass media contributes to the racial avalanche’s complexity today. Because we are believed to live in a post-racial society, Blackness must demonstrate the alleged color blindness of societal progress.

The culprit? All those dang node_modules folders. I would keep these old folders of my CMS around as backups of local installs on the off-chance something would break. (Eventually, I started compressing them.)
