After over a year of battling Covid-19, many have been relieved to find that a Moderna vaccination has been approved. People around the world have been hopeful that with the introduction of the vaccine, the rising rates of Coronavirus cases will begin to dramatically decrease and finally mark the beginning of the end of the pandemic.
However, not everyone views the vaccine as positive reinforcement, especially 46-year-old Wisconsin pharmacist Steven Brandenburg who has been accused of purposefully ruining over 500 doses.

On December 24, 2020, Steven, an employee of Aurora Medical Centre, removed 57 vials of the Coronavirus vaccine from the refrigerator and left them out overnight before putting them back in the following morning. On the night of December 25, Steven once again removed the vials from the refrigerator intending to leave them out overnight for a second time, however this time, the violation was noticed by a co-worker, a pharmacy technician, who promptly reported the incident.
Each vial contained 10 doses, meaning 570 vaccines have potentially been rendered useless as they need to be stored between 36 and 46 degrees Fahrenheit. The vaccines are ineffective after 12 hours without refrigeration.
Upon the discovery of Steven’s actions, Aurora Health conducted an investigation and released the following statement on December 30, 2020:
“Earlier this week, we learned that 57 vials of Moderna vaccine were removed from a pharmacy refrigerator at Aurora Medical Center — Grafton overnight, resulting in more than 500 doses of vaccine being discarded. We immediately launched an internal review and were led to believe this was caused by inadvertent human error. The individual in question today acknowledged that they intentionally removed the vaccine from refrigeration. We have notified appropriate authorities for further investigation. We continue to believe that vaccination is our way out of the pandemic. We are more than disappointed that this individual’s actions will result in a delay of more than 500 people receiving their vaccine. This was a violation of our core values, and the individual is no longer employed by us.”
Steven was immediately arrested following the investigation and terminated from Aurora Medical Centre.
It was later discovered Steven’s wife had filed for divorce only a day prior to his arrest citing he is an ‘admitted conspiracy theorist’ who believed the vaccines were harmful. That they were capable of altering DNA and that the world was ‘crashing down.’ The divorce papers stated Steven’s wife was afraid of the safety and lives of her children after her daughter returned home from a weekend visit with her father and said he had told her, “This is not our home, Heaven is our home.”
Steven had also dropped off 30 days worth of food and powdered milk to his estranged wife’s home stating that “the government is planning cyber attacks and plans to shut down the power grid” and that if she didn’t agree, she was in ‘serious denial.’ Steven was discovered to have rented a storage container filled with bulk food and guns.
When speaking to investigators Steven stated that “people who received the vaccinations would think they had been vaccinated against the virus when in fact they were not” signifying he was aware of the consequences of his actions.
Steven was released on a $10,000 bond, forced to relinquish all of his firearms and barred from continuing work in the health care field and from communicating with any Aurora Health employees. He faces charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, adulterating a prescription drug and criminal damage to property.
Steven has not yet been formally charged as an investigation is underway to determine if and how many of the vaccines were damaged and rendered useless in order to prove a crime has been committed. Regardless, Steven will face a charge of attempted criminal damage to property, a misdemeanour.
There has been no scientifically-backed evidence that the Coronavirus vaccine can alter and genetically modify human DNA.
