Buckets of vermicelli, snacks, cooking ingredients, and other staple food like rice were being thrown into the fire. Buckets. There must have been a few kilos of good food gone into the fire pit as I sat in the front row of the congregation room, staring at the big screen (the fire pit was being recorded outside and projected inside) in front of me, absolutely horrified.

I went to temples with my parents to chant mantras, prayed and presented offerings to my ancestors and the many Buddhist Gods, listened to my parents relating the rules governing our belief — what to do, what not to do — and observed all the rituals and practices.

learning content on Lex’s channel, my favourite video is this fascinating conversation with Joscha Bach. This conversation will have you in awe at the speed at which Joscha delivers elegant responses to questions that dance around the topic of consciousness, the human mind and our Universe.

I want to learn it because I’ve noticed that a lot of problems at my work can be solved with time series modelling. Similarly, there are a lot of personal projects that I would like to complete which require knowledge in time series modelling.

I hope this inspires you to plan what you want to learn next year! What you learn next year should depend on where you currently stand in terms of knowledge, so don’t feel like you have to follow this article — take what you want from it. :)

Religion is a big thing in Indonesia where I was born and raised. It’s stated in our personal ID card and it’s one of the deciding factors in many life decisions. What we can eat, who we can marry, how we should live our lives. Religion plays a big role in big and small things in life.

I didn’t have any issue following instructions and doing what was asked of me. I was still trying to find my identity and I didn’t give religion much thought. My parents said Buddhism is our religion, all the rituals and practices will keep us away from harm and help us prosper and there’s that.

I watched in horror as big buckets of food were being fed into the fire. I was attending a Buddhist praying event with my family and we had come to the part where we were sending offerings to the Gods through fire.

More importantly, recommendation systems are revenue-generating. Amazon’s 29% increase in sales in 2015 was largely attributed to its recommendation systems all over its website. Also, a little bird told me that Faire, a company like Amazon, became profitable the year after it introduced recommendation systems.

“I don’t need to have this one… being/figure telling me that it’s wrong to steal or kill or harm others. I should be not doing those things because I have my moral and I know harming others is not right.”

And you have to strive for perfection if you want to create the best machine learning and deep learning models. In fact, if you look at the models created by the top data scientists on Kaggle, much of their success is attributed to hyperparameter optimization!
