By seeing this pervasive phenomenon so clearly, spelling out its practical implications for businesses and consumers, and giving it a catchy name, Anderson helped make “The Long Tail” a buzzword, and earned a spot in TIME magazine’s 2007 list of the world’s 100 most influential people. (In it Malcolm Gladwell described the concept as “a Truly Big Idea.”)

On October 13th 2020 I stepped down as CEO of CircleUp, the company I started in 2011 with my co-founder, Rory Eakin. Leaving the best job I ever had — at the company I helped to create — was difficult and confusing. I wish I had found other stories about how the transition actually went and what it felt like. But I found surprisingly few first-hand accounts from founders or CEOs transitioning from their initial role, and even fewer that shared their full, authentic story of what really happened when they left and how they truly felt about the process. With limited precedent to guide me, I found the process extremely hard to manage, both logistically and emotionally.

Anderson captured both the coming phenomenon of the Long Tail and offered a playbook for taking advantage of it, which attracted broad interest, especially among internet entrepreneurs — basically, an upside for anyone who wasn’t going to win by being in the “hits” business.

Under ordinary circumstances, freelancers are encouraged to “pitch outside the box,” and an editor who set racially discriminatory criteria for pitches and then excoriated a writer for being the wrong color would be seen as utterly out of line (not to mention running afoul of equal opportunity laws.) But for the past few years, diversity concerns and a desire to be — and perhaps more importantly, to be seen as — supportive to underrepresented writers have begun to blur the lines.

so sad for our son who’s father regrets him. Now it feels like our whole future is warped. When we were going through IVF, it seemed he wanted it even more than I did now. He’s totally changed. How do we spend the rest of our lives like this? If he’s unhappy now, surely, that’s only going to get worse as the years go by, and he’ll end up resenting us?

I’ll start with a simple observation: Creativity consists of both novelty and constraints. The first part is obvious enough. When we create, we’re expanding the range of possible solutions to our problems. That’s the part most people associate with the concept of creativity. The second part is more subtle and certainly more difficult. There’s a massive scaffolding of evaluative criteria through which creativity is selected. My dog plays the piano. (True fact, and it’s adorable.) But his paw-banging doesn’t play within the constraints of creativity, so in no sense is he acting creatively.

But I don’t want to dwell on why it’s wrong. Instead, I want to celebrate why creativity remains a uniquely human pursuit. I’d like to discriminate between the ideas of applied and fundamental creativity, which in my mind illuminates the particular niche that today’s AI may soon dominate.

First, I found that everyone’s idea of what you should do varies. For some, working a typical 9 to 5 job is a must. Without it, you’re stepping out into the unknown realm that’s bound to swallow you whole.

In private Facebook groups where freelance job opportunities circulate, it’s not unusual to see postings that lead with race, sex, and/or sexual orientation. Community members are expected to both understand and respect the implicit subtext. Roost’s mistake was that she not only failed to read between the lines — white women need not apply — but then refused to agree that she was wrong not to.

Ostensibly, it should be possible to believe in two self-evident truths at once — that historically underrepresented writers deserve the opportunity to be published, and that membership in a given identity category does not mitigate the need to earn a living. Most writers, even the whitest and most heterosexual among us, have bills to pay. But the quest to improve diversity sometimes tips over into dicier territory, demanding that individual writers withdraw from professional life, and sideline their own careers, for the good of the cause.

The goal of single-file deployment is to package an application and all its dependencies in a single executable file. When you launch the file, the runtime unpacks the resources and loads them dynamically. Simple, right? Not so fast.

This contrast between creativity’s novel and (er) dogmatic aspects establishes a distinction between applied and fundamental creativity. We routinely create solutions within the established evaluative criteria of a given problem space: pop songs, advertisements, business franchises, movie sequels, incremental hypotheses, and on and on. What marks this large class of applied creative works is their derivative quality. They don’t break new ground as much as solve the narrow problems for which they were devised.
