Are Motherboard Chipset Drivers Still Needed?

Computers are something we can easily list as our greatest inventions of all time. From the first mechanical computer to the supercomputers and now quantum computers, we have come a long way and don’t know how much more we will progress. But with every progression we have made our machines more complex and harder to understand. Though they can do a bunch of stuff from a versatile education tool to even predicting weather, we use computers in almost everything and every field. One such important aspect of today’s computers are drivers. Drivers are an undeniable component that work between hardware, users and software to keep the operations running smoothly and also enable many other aspects. So in this article we will discuss the necessity of these drivers and will also try to throw some light on if motherboard chipset drivers are still needed or not? Have a look:

What are Drivers?

If you go by definition then Device Drivers are small programs that help a device to perform. I am pretty sure that this definition is not going to give you the full picture. So I will try to present a better outlook. Drivers are computer programs that are designed in accordance with the structure of a particular device. For example if you have a printer then there will be a particular driver for your printer’s model and you will need to install it, if you want the computer to recognize that printer. Same goes with USBs, keyboard, mouse, expansion cards, etc.

Almost everything attached to your computer, even the ports need a driver before they can be recognized. If I would have to explain it in other words then I guess it would be something like you want to drive a car and you are pressing the accelerator but there is nothing attached between the paddle and the engine, so your car won’t know what to do. So even though you have a car, what good it is, if it doesn’t even work.

Installation issues

So now we know what device drivers are and how important they can be but in reality the scenario is a little more complicated. When one purchases the computer from the supplier, he or she usually gets a system that is modified according to the users needs. All the drivers, software, OS, devices, etc are preinstalled. So users can start working right away, without facing any kind of problem. The issue arises when the users are not aware of released patches and new updates that they need to install over the time. As your operating system gets new updates, your apps and other programs do too. And these updated software are enhanced and need to interact with the devices in a more efficient way, so if your device drivers are old then your apps won’t even interact with these devices. The issue arises when the users are not aware of this fact and hence they are not able to resolve this situation. With time, the situation gets worse and the computer starts freezing and crashing.

Are Chipset Drivers still needed?

On your motherboard there are a lot of small integrated chips. Some are ROM and you can recognize some as RAM, but there are some integrated circuit boards too. These are designed to serve various functions like creating graphics, playing sound, running the internet, etc. Sure, users can also install expansion cards like graphics cards from other companies which are more powerful than the chipset one and can handle heavy software. Users need to understand here that even though your expansion cards are really helpful, they should not be considered as an alternative to chipset drivers. If you want to run multiple screens then these chipset drivers will interact with other monitors to create graphics on it. Even though their size is small, they are still really helpful. They also help maintain resolution and other aspects. So in short, yes, chipset drivers are still needed.

Installing and updating them from time to time can be quite hard for people who have never done it before. But if you have not update your device drivers in a long time then you should check this out.

So whenever you see an update, install it. If you face any issues then you can always roll back to the previous versions.

Hope it helps.
