The good news is that brick and mortar and online retailers are getting better and better at weeding out sub-par tech products. They finally figured out that there’s little reason to carry a $5 wired headphone when a $9.99 Bluetooth one available.

rday afternoon right in the middle of last year. I was at home, relaxing, when I got a call from my CEO. I hesitated to take it, but I also knew that following the recent set of events at the company, he had to talk to me. I took the call. 10 minutes into the conversation, he asked me point blank: “Should I fire your manager?”

It’s essentially a clearinghouse for all your legacy audio media, including CDs. A few months ago, I cleared out a TV cabinet and found my old, ignored CD collection (I also have stacks of vinyl and more than a few cassette tapes in my basement)and then went in search of a portable CD player. I know, you’d think I’d put this $249 gadget on my “no list,” but there’s something romantic about reviving old music media (and yes, I’m sure I could find all of this music on Apple Music, Pandora, or Spotify).

By the time I discovered the organization recently, it had been years since anyone had heard from him. This was particularly disconcerting since from everything I’d read and heard, Jackson was a rabble-rouser in his heyday.

My Blu-Ray DVD player gathers dust most of the year, as do the boxes and boxes of disc media I’ve collected since 1999. The explosion of bespoke streaming platforms means that almost everything I ever wanted to see or binge is available via one service or another. If you’re thinking about ponying up $5 to $15 for a few DVDs or $40 for a few Blu-Rays, I suggest you look at sampling, for instance, HBOMax or Disney .

After some digging, I was able to find Jackson at the Good Samaritan Rehab and Care Center in Stockton and was able to go before the pandemic would make such a trip impossible. I joined the residents watching a movie in the common room, where I was told to wait while Jackson finished a dialysis treatment. Eventually, he joined me for an interview, and I was struck by his condition. He was not doing well.

“Darcel is really a connector — every time he went to an event, he would end up with 15 business cards of people who wanted to have something to do with him,” says Hicham Sabir, one of the early ShelterTech crew. “He would say if you’re a Black male in San Francisco, you’re basically at the bottom of the list of priorities — I think it took him six months to see a social worker.”

On the other hand, I did find some whoppers, bad choices, and a few incomplete ideas. I also saw more than a handful of excellent gift options, some of which I may mention here as well.
