Bankof America – Apple and big tech employees top contributors to Biden campaign

A new report says that employees at Apple donated nearly $2 million to Joe Biden‘s presidential campaign, and that big tech was the biggest source of donations from corporate employers to his cause.

From The Wall Street Journal:

Employees of big technology firms were a key source of contributions for Joe Biden‘s presidential campaign, newly released campaign finance records show, eclipsing donations from employees at traditional Democratic fundraising sources such as banks and law firms.

Employees of Google’s parent, Alphabet Inc., and Microsoft Corp., Amazon.com Inc., Apple Inc. and Facebook Inc. were the five largest sources of money for Mr. Biden‘s campaign and joint fundraising committees among those identifying corporate employers, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of campaign finance reports.

Records show that Joe Biden received more than $15 million in contributions from the employees of those companies. Alphabet (Google) employees were the biggest contributor, followed by Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and then Facebook. Whilst the report notes that previous Democrat candidates including Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama also received strong support from the sector, it was not the top source of employee donations for either of them.

By way of comparison, the top sources of employee donations for Donald Trump‘s campaign were American Airlines, Boeing, Bank of America, Lockheed Martin, and Wells Fargo. One former spokesman for the Republican National Committee there was a “disconnect between the tech industry and many Republicans” stating “we don’t like Silicon Valley – and they don’t like us.”
The presidential campaign of Joe Biden received considerable donations from employees of tech companies, campaign finance records reveal, with Apple employees reportedly the fourth-largest source of funding.

President Joe Biden's campaign and supporting joint fundraising committees saw a high level of donations from employees linked to the five tech giants for the 2020 election, an investigation reveals. Employees from Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Facebook provided at least $15.1 million in total to the campaign.

The employee donations from each company, collected by the main Biden campaign and joint fundraising committees, are also the five largest sources of donations on the list, as analyzed by the Wall Street Journal. The data used declarations from employees identifying who their employer is, which did not apply to everyone.

While individuals could donate up to $2,800 to a candidate, their employer's disclosure is only required for donations valued at $200 or more. This limitation makes it entirely plausible for the amount donated by the group to be higher than reported.

According to the report, Apple's employees made up the fourth-largest group, at just under $2 million. The figure just beats the $1.9 million donated by Facebook employees, the fifth-place group.

The top position went to Alphabet employees with $5.3 million, followed by Microsoft with $3.2 million, and Amazon with $2.8 million.

By contrast, donations to Biden's campaign from employees Goldman Sachs Group, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and JPMorgan totaled $3.7 million, a group figure dwarfed by Alphabet's employees.

In previous elections, the employee donations list had more non-tech companies at the top of the pile. In 2016, Hillary Clinton's top five had Apple, Google, and Microsoft joined by law firm Morgan & Morgan and JPMorgan Chase. For Barack Obama, top contributions stemmed from Google and Microsoft, as well as law firm DLA Piper, Deloitte, and Time Warner.

The analysis of donation disclosures arrives at a time when the tech companies are facing considerable scrutiny by the government and regulators. The tech giants have been accused of censorship and not doing enough to prevent the spread of misinformation, and have been targeted by the Safe Tech Act in response.

There have also been attempts to introduce new antitrust legislation to curtail the power of tech companies and their control over platforms, following exhaustive investigations.

The high number of donations from tech company employees can also be an issue for their critics, fearful of how much the White House may appease donors. In December, a joint letter from 33 groups urged Biden to "reject the influence" of major tech companies, accusing them of wielding "immense influence" over elections and being a serious threat to "privacy, democracy, innovation, and Americans' economic well-being."

More malware affecting Apple Silicon Macs has been uncovered, but researchers have spotted that it is lacking a malicious payload, for the moment.

It seems that there may be more malware aimed at Apple's M1-based Macs than previously thought. Following the initial reports of the first M1 malware found in the wild, it seems that there are more infections of malware, but of a particularly toothless variety.

Early in February, researchers from Red Canary discovered a strain of macOS malware that used LaunchAgent to make its presence, much like some other forms of malware. What was of interest to the researchers was that the malware behaved differently from typical adware, due to how it used JavaScript for execution.

The malware cluster, named by the researchers as "Silver Sparrow," also involved a binary compiled to work with M1 chips. This made it malware that would potentially target Apple Silicon Macs.

Further research from researchers at VMware Carbon Black and Malwarebytes determined it was likely that Silver Sparrow was a "previously undetected strain of malware." As of February 17, it had been detected in 29,139 macOS endpoints across 153 countries, with the bulk of infections residing in the US, the UK, Canada, France, and Germany.

At the time of publication, the malware hasn't been used to deliver a malicious payload to victim Macs, though that could change in the future. Due to the compatibility with M1, the "relatively high infection rate" and the operational maturity of the malware, it was deemed to be a serious enough threat that is "uniquely positioned to deliver a potentially impactful payload at a moment's notice," prompting a public disclosure.

Two versions of the malware were discovered, with one version's payload consisting of a binary affecting Intel-based Macs only, while the other was a binary that was compiled for both Intel and M1 architectures. The payload is seemingly a placeholder, as the first version opens a window that literally says "Hello, World!" and the second states "You did it!"

An example of the included binary [via Red Canary]
If it were malicious malware, the payload could potentially allow the same or similar payload instructions to affect both architectures from a single executable.

The mechanism for the malware worked around files titled "update.pkg" and "updater.pkg," taking the guise of installers. They take advantage of the macOS Installer JavaScript API to execute the suspicious commands.

This is a behavior that is sometimes seen with legitimate software and not malware, which usually uses preinstall or post-install scripts for command execution.

Once successful, the infection attempts to check a specific URL for a downloadable file, which could contain further instructions or a final payload. A week of monitoring the malware resulted in no visible final payload being made available, which could still change in the future.

There are multiple questions left unanswered to the researchers about Silver Sparrow. These include where the initial PKG files came to be used for infecting systems, and elements of the malware's code that seems to be part of a wider toolset.

"The ultimate goal of this malware is a mystery," Red Canary admits. "We have no way of knowing with certainty what payload would be distributed by the malware, if a payload has already been delivered and removed, or if the adversary has a future timeline for distribution."
