ean, but he was right. When I started writing whole entire essays and sending them to people at places I really wanted to write for, they started printing them. It is the only advice I have to give anyone who wants to write: Don’t pitch. Just write something that’s as good as you can make it and then get it to the best person to read it.

Hardship and change have been two unfortunate hallmarks of the year 2020, for some of us much more than others. We’ve all done what we can to get through it. But we’re getting through it. After it’s over, the overwhelming majority of us will be people who survived.

That was my first thought (we can look at this as the opposite bookend to Chappelle’s 2016 appearance). Last time, Dave rolled out in black jacket, jean, grey t-shirt get up. But this time he wore a suit.

Usually, these type of stories are told for an early ice breaker. A cheap applause. And that’s how the story starts. Chappelle mentions flying in on a private jet to host SNL, right? So this is a “look how far we’ve come” story, right? Yes and no. Because I can imagine his great-grandfather being blown away by seeing his descendant on national television, an idol to whites and Blacks alike.

Nope. What it was instead was a commentary on licensing. A few weeks back it was announced that the Dave Chappelle Show would be coming to Netflix and HBO Max and fans celebrated the “non-exclusive pact between ViacomCBS and WarnerMedia.”

Maybe you, reader, will have watched it by the time this pops up on Medium, maybe not. Maybe you’ve already canceled Dave because of any one of his last shows which you don’t deem funny. Maybe.

Don’t be an asshole. Don’t assume you can get up and start telling these jokes before you even figured out how jokes work. That opening joke is Dave flexing on you mofos, trust.

As Heid points out, this emerging “allostatic” understanding of the brain and body is already being reflected, to some extent, in modern mental health care (even if it’s not being framed in exactly those terms). Here’s the thing — you have to earn the right to tell those type of jokes. You can’t go to an open mic where the average set is five minutes and spend HALF of that time telling ONE joke. This is the equivalent to Biggie’s Number Ten rule, this is strictly for live men, not for freshmen.
