But later on, more logical minds dwelled on the problem by looking into the mechanics of the failure. Detailed analysis of the gallows revealed that the key components were not exactly maintained in ship-shape and certain components may become jammed and fail to open for a ‘certain’ weight of the prisoner. In Lee’s case, it was a stroke of luck coupled with human carelessness that probably saved his life three times in a row.

Fifty years later, when forensic sciences were put in use to deduce the case, it was found that the real killer was none other than John Lee’s first solicitor, Reginald Gwynne Templar. As the only male member in the house, Lee became the immediate suspect. A bloodied knife was found in a drawer besides Lee’s bed, and he himself was covered in blood — although he claimed he cut his arm after smashing a window when he discovered the fire in his mistress’s bedroom. There were no witnesses and Lee had no motive and all pieces of evidence found were purely ‘circumstantial’.

But then, this raises the question of why the corrections made after the second attempt did not solve the problem. The experts had no answer and the investigation was closed with the mechanical failure believed to be the most logical but unexciting explanation for the failed hanging of John Lee.

Note the kink at x=1146.33. This is where the hinge function h(c-x) becomes zero, and the line changes its slope. The graph makes it very intuitive to understand how MARS can better fit the data using hinge functions.

The Home Secretary, Sir William Harcourt later commuted John Lee’s sentence to a life sentence stating that ‘It would shock the feeling of anyone if a man had twice to pay the pangs of imminent death’.

But this was the 19th century and forensic science was still in its infancy and there was no way to prove that the blood found on Lee did not belong to Keyse. John Lee was guilty of murdering Emma Keyse and put on trial.

Since we increased the number of dimensions, we now have two slope parameters in a linear regression model (one for each x). We also have 4 hinge functions that have been added to the MARS model using both independent variables.

Then one day, tragedy struck on the morning of 15th November 1884, when Miss Emma Keyse was found brutally murdered with her throat slit from ear-to-ear with a kitchen knife. she had three deep puncture wounds to her head and in an attempt to hide the crime the murderer had even attempted to set her corpse on fire but was unsuccessful.

A local solicitor, named Reginald Gwynne Templer was told by the court to represent Lee. However, 2 days before the trial, Reginald Templer excused himself for reasons of ill-health and handed over his duties to his brother Charles Templer who was an incompetent advocate. Lee maintained his innocence throughout but the evidence against him was too strong and Charles Templer lost the case easily against the strong prosecution.

Being broke, John got the job as a footman but was found guilty of stealing from his employer and was sentenced to two years of hard labor. After 2 years in 1884, he finally got the job as a servant for Emma Keyse, a rich, kindly widow staying in Babbacombe Bay. Lee seemed to have good relations with his employer as soon he became her trusted servant in a short time.

But on the day of the hanging, John Lee wouldn’t die. The executioner James Berry and the warden tried everything possible to coerce the hanging mechanism to work but it failed three times after which the medical officer refused to participate in the debacle, and with no medical officer on-sight, the execution was stopped.
