Too often, we allow ourselves to be pulled into the directions other people want us to move towards. We build our lives around everything they want us to do, all the while we sabotage ourselves from what we really need.

Why did I pick these two tasks? As a video guy, I know they’re two of the most important functions my computers perform. The speed with which they do so will dictate how quickly I can publish my YouTube videos or get paid by clients.

I’ve been using the MacBook Pro 16' for around a year now, and it is a superb machine. Despite the emergence of the M1 chip, I think the 16' still has a place today within lots of people’s lives and businesses.

that to these people, media like The Dressmaker or Necrobarista is something new: it’s structured differently, it approaches its themes and subject matter differently, and that’s not what they’re familiar with. The Dressmaker walks and talks like a Western, but sprinkles in romance, dry Australian humour, and elements of farce. Necrobarista has gorgeous anime aesthetics, but also has behelmeted folk hero Ned Kelly asking an Indian Australian tradie if he’d like to punch a durry — and that is an extremely meaningful and complex moment of bonding between two Australian men that simply wouldn’t read as significant or important to people from other cultures. There’s a lot of communication hidden between the lines that would be destroyed by over-explanation.

They have to deal with pushback from those in and out of their lives, online and in-person. That’s a tough pill to swallow when all you want to do is express yourself creatively.

Writers should encourage other writers. A community of creative people can quickly become a community of jealous, harsh critics when motives are off base. And that can easily contaminate the process.

That’s where we step over the line. We go out of bounds and into an area that causes us to change course, forgetting that it’s not about how comparable we are to someone else.

But you should never let their opinions take away your choice to explore your creative ambition. Doing so will leave you empty. Keep writing, despite the tension that comes with it.

You know what you’re shooting for, they don’t. You know what you’re capable of, sometimes they don’t. And as hard as that may seem, it’s a reality for more people than we often assume.

Instead, we bask in our present state, not realizing that where they started wasn’t so comfortable either. We all have to start somewhere. It’s the first part of any journey. But we can’t let other people hold us back from stepping out.

Writing is the creative outlet for writers. Holding back on expressing your creativity almost always equals something bad. Eventually, we begin to stagnate and the drive that once burned fades.

With a group of imaginative people, it can also become easy to compare your progress with theirs. You’re not where they were at this point in time, so you must be doing something wrong.
