Cambodia Corona cases are increasing, First Death occurs

Phnom Penh - Cambodian authorities reported the first death from the Corona virus (COVID-19) in its territory. This first death was reported when Cambodia was facing an increase in Corona cases recently.
As reported by Reuters on Thursday (11/3/2021), Cambodia's Ministry of Health announced that a 50-year-old man had died after testing positive for Corona less than two weeks ago. The man, who was not named, died on Thursday (11/3) morning local time.

It was further stated that the man tested positive for Corona on 27 February. He is a driver for a Chinese national living in the coastal city of Sihanoukville, who has also been infected with the Coronavirus.

Cambodia has reported a sharp increase in Corona cases since 20 February. So far, 1,124 Corona cases have been recorded in the Cambodian region - the total is recorded as one of the lowest Corona cases in the Asian region.

Corona Soaring, Luxury Hotels in Cambodia Turned Into Hospitals
Previously, the Cambodian Ministry of Health said that new cases had emerged as a result of the new outbreak in the local community. Contact tracing led to a foreign national breaking quarantine at a hotel and visiting a local nightclub in early February.

Cambodia, which has a population of 16 million, is located adjacent to Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, which have successfully controlled the spread of Corona in their respective regions. The country has started a Corona vaccination program in its territory since last month.

Meanwhile, the surge in Corona cases in Cambodia has prompted the government to convert a luxury hotel in Phnom Penh into a hospital (hospital) for Corona patients. The defunct luxury hotel was converted into a 500-room hospital in two days.
Not only that, the Cambodian authorities have also implemented a new law that imposes criminal penalties for any violation of health regulations and infections that continue to increase in the country.

On Friday (5/3), the Cambodian government passed a law (UU) that imposes criminal penalties, including fines and imprisonment, for those who violate health regulations to prevent the spread of Corona.

Under the new law, the act of deliberately spreading the Coronavirus could be punishable by up to 10 years in prison, or 20 years in prison if the offense was committed by an organized group.

However, critics say the law is prone to abuse because it is not very clear. Local authorities are judged to be able to use the law arbitrarily by targeting people and groups who are protesting against government policies during the pandemic.

To deal with the pandemic, Luxury Hotels in Cambodia are Turned Into Hospitals
A luxury hotel in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, has been converted into a hospital for Coronavirus (COVID-19) patients after an increase in infection cases in the country. This defunct luxury hotel was converted into a 500-room hospital.
As reported by the Associated Press, Tuesday (9/3/2021), this luxury hotel called Great Duke Phnom Penh has been out of operation for two years. On Monday (8/3) local time, the luxury hotel was finished being converted into a special hospital to treat Corona patients in the middle of the third wave that hit Cambodia.

Prime Minister Hun Sen assigned General Hun Manet, his eldest son and an influential military commander, to lead efforts to turn the luxury hotel into a temporary hospital within two days.

The property is currently owned by a Chinese businessman who changed the hotel name after buying it from a Cambodian tycoon. It is not clear why the luxury hotel was closed
Located in downtown Phnom Penh and still in good condition, this hotel was famous in the 2000s. At that time, the hotel was popular with foreign diplomatic circles, NGOs and other groups to hold conferences or meetings held by the government.

Cambodian authorities have officially recorded 1,011 coronavirus cases in its territory, with no deaths so far. On Monday (8/3) local time, the Cambodian Ministry of Health announced 24 cases of Corona a day.

Cambodia's Ministry of Health said in a statement that new cases emerged as a result of the new outbreak in the local community. Contact tracing led to a foreign national breaking quarantine at a hotel and visiting a local nightclub in early February.
The violations resulted in the emergence of many new cases of Corona, which prompted the government on February 20 to announce the closure of all public schools, cinemas, bars and entertainment areas in Phnom Penh for two weeks.

Since then, the Cambodian government has extended the closure by two weeks of schools, gyms, concert venues, museums and other entertainment venues in Phnom.
