In a long-awaited matchup, the Kansas City Chiefs travel to the Big Easy to face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:25 p.m. Arrowhead Time. The game will be broadcast on CBS — locally on KCTV/5.

The defending Super Bowl champions arrive at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome with a 12-1 record, fresh off a 33-27 road victory over the Miami Dolphins and looking to extend an eight-game winning streak. The Saints — now 10-3 — had won nine straight before losing to the Philadelphia Eagles 24-21 last Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

This game has playoff implications for both teams. While Kansas City is already holding the AFC West crown, a Chiefs win — combined with losses by the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills this weekend — will clinch the single AFC bye, guaranteeing home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. A Saints win (or a Tampa Bay loss) will clinch the NFC South title (and at least one postseason home game) for New Orleans.

Reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes leads the Chiefs offense. He currently tops the league with 4,208 passing yards — 1,250 of them to tight end Travis Kelce, who leads all receivers at any position. He also ranks second in yards per touch with 13.9 — trailing only his teammate Tyreek Hill, who has 14.4. In total, the offense is leading the league in yards, yards per play and drive scoring percentage — and at 31.0 points a game, trails only the Green Bay Packers in scoring.

41-year-old Saints quarterback Drew Brees has missed the last four games due to 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung he suffered in Week 10. Brees — himself a former Super Bowl MVP — was reported on Friday to be ready to return against the Chiefs. While Brees has been out, multi-dimensional athlete Taysom Hill filled in at quarterback, leading the team to three victories before last Sunday’s loss. The two quarterbacks have completely different playing styles — and either would present problems for the Kansas City defense.

Speaking of which... the Saints’ defense could be the best the Chiefs have faced in 2020. Allowing only 20.4 points per game — fourth-best in the league — the team has been stingy against both the pass and the run, giving up an average of just 5.0 yards per play. That figure is tied for third-best in the league.

The two head coaches are also among the league’s best. Andy Reid and Sean Payton both have Super Bowl victories to their credit — and have excellent won-loss records during their head coaching careers. In their eight games against each other, they’ve battled to a 4-4 draw — almost all of them while Reid was head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. In their only matchup during Reid’s time with the Chiefs — during Week 7 of 2016 in New Orleans — Kansas City won 27-21.
