If we want to define the probability distribution only on a subset of variables, we use marginal probability distribution. To her credit, Twenge recently published an article that’s far more measured and accurate. In fact, it powerfully refutes the claims she made in the 2017 article. The article is a review of her new survey of 1,523 teens, which dives into how they’ve been doing throughout the quarantine.

In 2017, The Atlantic published an article by Jean Twenge called Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? The article went viral because it made terrifying claims, including, “Teens who spend three hours a day or more on electronic devices are 35 percent more likely to have a risk factor for suicide, such as making a suicide plan.”

In hindsight, these ideas are ridiculous. But back then, they were widespread fears, and they were amplified by manipulative people who wanted women to be docile and dependent.

We all make mistakes and have slips, and triggers can sometimes be more random or less common than others. However, I believe that people should make a legitimate effort to avoid triggering you and to keep your triggers in the back of their minds. They should apologize when they slip up and ask how they can support you after. They should never guilt you for having triggers or for feeling triggered.

The probability of continuous variables can be defined using probability density function (PDF). As continuous variables are not finite, we use an integral to define PDF. The probability of every possible continuous value has to be greater than or equal to zero but not preferably less than or equal to 1 as a continuous value isn’t finite. Although, the integration of all probabilities has to be equal to 1.

If we want to determine the probability distribution on two or more random variables, we use joint probability distribution. For a typical data attribute in machine learning, we have multiple possible values. Computing probability of all values falls under joint probability.

Although excessive social media use among teens is correlated with higher self-reported mental health issues, the effect is extremely small. In fact, it’s so small that it’s almost insignificant. As I explained in my recent Medium column, a look at the raw data discussed in that article reveals that the effect of social media on teen depression is roughly equivalent to the effect of eating potatoes. Unless potatoes are also “destroying a generation,” social media is probably not worth the panic.

Fast forward around 125 years. Today, many widespread beliefs about modern technology mirror the Victorian moral panic over bicycles. For example, every parent “knows” social media is awful for teenagers’ mental health… but is it?

Variance defines how the output of an event varies as values (influencing the event) are picked from a probability distribution. It defines how the one value differs from the other values, or in simple terms, the variability of the dataset.
