COVID-19 Vaccine Administrattion Start on Thursday

Florida’s partnership with Publix grocery store chain to administer COVID-19 vaccine doses is expanding and will now include 16 Publix locations in Collier County.

During a media briefing in Ponte Vedra Beach Wednesday morning, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that beginning Wednesday, Jan 13, people 65 and older can make appointments to receive the vaccine at the newly announced locations through Publix online at publix.com/covidvaccine. Vaccine administration at the newly added Publix pharmacy locations, including those in Collier County, begins Thursday.

Last week’s initial rollout of vaccines being offered through Publix pharmacies included 23 stores in Citrus, Marion and Hernando Counties. Earlier this week, that expanded to include 26 more Publix locations in Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton and Bay Counties in the Florida Panhandle.

The new Publix vaccine distribution sites announced Wednesday include 14 stores in St. John’s County, 4 in Flagler, 22 in Volusia and 16 sites throughout Collier County including:

During Wednesday’s media briefing in Ponte Vedra Beach, Governor DeSantis touted the state’s vaccine rollout so far. “We have now done in the state of Florida, there’s been reported close to 400,000 seniors have received vaccines. That’s the most of any state by a country mile and that’s just what’s being reported,” said DeSantis.

“We’re the only state that’s done a majority of our vaccines for seniors and we’ve done now 60% of all reported shots have gone to people 65 and up and that percentage is going to increase each week.”

DeSantis repeated his stance that prioritizing seniors over essential workers in the initial vaccine rollout is the right decision. On Tuesday Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said the federal government is directing states to use their vaccine supplies to start vaccinating individuals age 65 and older as well as anyone with a comorbidity that puts them at risk.

What you need to know: Which Publix stores in Collier County are offering COVID-19 vaccines? Here's a list.

The stores are offering the Moderna vaccine. Appointments are required at publix.com/covid-vaccine.

Maria Brous, director of communications for Publix, said the site is live now for appointments in Collier but people could get a note that says to check back shortly. That means the site is processing appointments.

She does not have number of doses available in Collier but appointments are still available, she said.

When appointments are filled, the message will change to say appointments are full.

Gov. Ron DeSantis was expected to hold a press conference around noon Wednesday at the Publix at The Shoppes at Pebblebrooke on Collier Boulevard.

On Tuesday, the governor held a press conference announcing that the state is expanding its COVID-19 vaccination partnership with Publix supermarkets in a way that should greatly benefit Northwest Florida seniors. He didn't mention Collier at the time.

Unlike vaccines being offered at county health departments, which anyone can receive, DeSantis said shots distributed at Publix are "going to be for folks in Florida."

Brous told the Ocala Star-Banner on Monday that 5,000 customers, age 65 or older, received the first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine last week at 22 stores in Marion, Citrus and Hernando counties.

"Publix has done a great job with this," DeSantis said. "We knew that they would because people love Publix in Florida."

The governor said "100 percent" of seniors he had spoken to during the weekend had given the Publix vaccine program high marks. He said even the Publix online registration has been judged a success. Online registration for vaccine appointments has proven problematic for county health departments across the state.

The governor said an estimated 100 to 125 COVID-19 shots a day would be give to Florida residents 65 and older.

The vaccines will be provided in-store and by appointment only, DeSantis told the reporters gathered at a Publix in Niceville.
