In America, the market’s twisted sociality so that people can’t care for one another the ways that are natural, like they are in the East. But it hasn’t just done that. It’s also made Americans incapable of caring for the planet, life on it, ecologies, nature. Do you see the lesson here? Sociality is what lets us care for other human beings, which lets us act collectively as societies.

Word of a serious paranormal investigation soon reached England’s amateur ghost hunters, who descended on St. Osyth carrying spirit boxes, ouija boards, and night vision cameras. Seizing an opportunity, Mitchell advertised the Cage as a haunted holiday home, and leased it to companies who charged visitors £35 ($45) to attend ghost hunts. The British tabloids dispatched reporters from the Sun, Daily Mail, and Daily Express, who called the Cage “the most haunted house in Britain.” A retired police officer claimed to have snapped a photograph of four ghosts carrying a dead witch in Coffin Alley. Others captured witch-like faces and even a ‘Satanic goat.’ (“It was an upside down parka coat,” Fraser told me.)

The Midas process requires stakeholders to first align on design specifications before building their pipelines. This is done via a Spec document that provides layman’s descriptions for metrics and dimensions, table schemas, pipeline diagrams, and describes non-obvious business logic and other assumptions. Once the spec is approved, a data engineer then builds the datasets and pipelines based on the agreed upon specification. The resulting data and code is then reviewed, and ultimately granted certification. The certification flags are made visible in all consumer facing data tools, and certified data is prioritized in data discoverability tools.

Last, but not least, we created new mechanisms for ensuring accountability related to data quality. We refreshed our process for reporting data quality bugs, and created a weekly Bug Review meeting for discussing high priority bugs and aligning on corrective actions. We also require that teams incorporate data pipeline SLAs into their quarterly OKR planning.

We are innately social. Innately. Not just among ourselves. But with all of life. All of it. Our natural instinct is to relate to it, care for it, respect it, even to love it. After some legal delays, the new owner of the Cage plans to move in by December. Mitchell felt it was her duty to warn her. The buyer is a divorcée who hoped to make a new start in St Osyth. The woman had no time for stories of the supernatural, Mitchell said.

But like I said, this lesson goes really, really deep: we’re social creatures, social beings, social animals. One part of it is: societies like America, which warp sociality through the destructive hand of the market, turning it into a commodity, a counterfeit of the real thing, won’t have enough true sociality to engage in any kind of collective action. Sociality amongst us — human beings — matters in profound ways now.

Then, last year, Mitchell found a new realtor who staged the property with broomsticks and books about the unexplained. On January 7, 2020, she accepted an offer of £224,000 ($300,000). The sale made international news, but after fees, taxes, and interest, Mitchell cannot calculate the extent of her losses. All she gained was a valuable lesson in hardship. “I’d learned about being terrified of something you can’t do anything about,” she told me. “I can deal with anything now.”

On April 15, 2012, Worland achieved his mission: The bones were reburied in unconsecrated land in St. Osyth, in a ceremony witnessed by Pagan and Christian representatives. It didn’t stop the curse of St. Osyth. Regulars abandoned the King’s Arms, and the owner shut its doors. Then on July 26, 2016, a car driving along Colchester Road mysteriously crashed into the Cage. The driver couldn’t explain how he lost control of the BMW. Mitchell had another son in 2016, but her relationship with his father ended too. Over the next three years, the Cage and the King’s Arms lay silent, apart from the occasional slamming door, or rattling chains, or the cries of infants echoing in the night. So the rumors went.

But the lesson goes way, way, way beyond that. What else does “we’re social beings” mean? It means that you smile when you see a little puppy. That you’re in awe when you see majestic white lion. That you feel an abiding sense of peace standing in that forest, a sweeping sense of melancholy standing before a stormy sea, a sense of happiness in the spring, a longing as the winter snows fall.
