Quoting the American Diabetes Association page, viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, can increase inflammation or internal swelling in people with diabetes. It can also be caused by high blood sugar levels and the inflammation can lead to severe complications.

When infected with the virus, people with diabetes will face an increased risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is commonly experienced by people with type-1 diabetes.
