Goddess Durga is said to be one of the most powerful deities in the Hindu pantheon. She is also known as Shakti (Power) or Devi (female goddess). She is worshipped by hordes of devotees who seek her blessings and protection. She represents feminine strength as embodied in the divine Mother
Goddess. The Sanskrit name ‘Durga’ means ‘fort’, which suggests her invincibility. She has the power to create as well as to destroy. She incarnated to destroy evil demons who threatened to wipe out righteousness or Dharma from the world.
She is also called Durgati Nashini, meaning ‘one who ends all sufferings’. She is the supreme Mother Goddess who is kind and caring to her devotees but a fearsome foe of those who cause harm to her followers. She is like a mother to her devotees, so she is also called Maa Durga.
Goddess Durga was born when the forces of evil began to pose a threat even to the Gods. Her divine incarnation had only one purpose – put an end to the reign of terror unleashed by evil forces. All the gods came together to form different parts of her body, and hence she is a symbol of the combined powers of the gods. Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva also offered her their powerful weapons, too – the Sudarshana chakra and the Trishul.
