Efforts to shift a container ship stuck in the Suez Canal

The stern of a huge container ship that has been wedged across the Suez Canal for almost a week has been freed from the shoreline, officials say.

The course of the 400m-long (1,300ft) Ever Given has been corrected by 80%, according to the Suez Canal Authority.

It added that further efforts to move the boat would resume later on Monday.

But the head of a company involved in the rescue efforts urged caution, warning that completing the operation would not be "a piece of cake".

The Ever Given has been blocking one of the world's busiest trade routes, forcing companies to reroute ships and causing long tailbacks of hundreds of vessels.

The reports that the ship had been partially freed raised hopes that traffic along the canal could resume within hours, clearing the way for an estimated $9.6bn (£7bn) of goods being held up each day.

Rescue workers from the authority and the Dutch company Smit Salvage used tug boats to wrench the rear of the ship from the canal bank.

Alongside the tugs, dredgers have been digging out sand and mud from under the bow of the vessel.

The stern, which had been 4m from the shore, was now 102m clear, the Suez Canal Authority said, adding that the boat had been fully refloated.

Efforts to move the boat would resume at 11:30 local time (09:30 GMT) once the tide rises, officials said.

In a statement, the Suez Canal Authority said that once the tide reached 2m, rescue workers would aim to fully restore "the vessel's direction so it is positioned in the middle of the navigable waterway".

Traffic would resume once the ship was moved to a waiting area in a wider section of the canal, the authority said. A total of 367 vessels are waiting to pass through.

"It is very possible that by today noon, shipping activity would resume," Suez Canal Authority Chairman Osama Rabie told Egyptian state television.

"We will not waste one second," he added.

But the CEO of the salvage company involved in the rescue efforts told Dutch public radio that the operation was far from complete.

"We have movement, which is good news. But I wouldn't say it's a piece of cake now," Peter Berdowski said.

He explained that high-pressure water would be used to try and remove sand and clay from underneath the bow of the ship, but if that failed, then containers would have to be lifted in an operation that could take some time.

"The bow is still stuck rock-solid at the moment in the slightly sandy clay," he said.

The 200,000-tonne Ever Given ran aground on Tuesday morning amid high winds and a sandstorm that affected visibility. Specialist salvage companies were brought in to help refloat the ship.

On Sunday, canal officials began preparing to remove some of roughly 20,000 containers on board in order to lighten the load.

The canal, which separates Africa from the Middle East and Asia, is one of the busiest trade routes in the world with about 12% of total global trade moving through it. It provides the shortest link between Asia and Europe.

An alternative route, around the Cape of Good Hope on the southern tip of Africa, can take two weeks longer.

Efforts to shift a container ship stuck in the Suez Canal have been partially successful, but more still needs to be done to free it completely.

The Ever Given, operated by the Taiwanese company Evergreen Marine, is the length of four football pitches and had been lying right across the southern end of the canal since Tuesday.

The Ever Given is 400m (1,300ft) and had been wedged diagonally across a canal not much more than 200m (656ft) wide.

Ship tracking software on Monday shows the ship's stern has now been successfully moved off the western bank but with it bow remaining close to the eastern shore.

A group of tugs remains in position around the vessel.

They've been using cables or placing themselves directly alongside the stricken ship, attempting to free the ship.

Alongside the tugs, dredgers have been digging out sand and mud from under the bow of the vessel.

These dredgers are a familiar sight on the Suez Canal, says maritime expert Sal Mercogliano, and are used to continually dredge the waterway to keep it navigable.

"Large machines stick down into the water and basically pull dirt up from the bottom, which you can then deposit onshore."

The company which manages the running of the vessel, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) says an additional specialist "suction dredger" was brought in, able to shift 2,000 cubic meters of material every hour.

If efforts to free the bow of the ship continue to prove difficult, a further option would be to remove fuel, water and cargo.

Draining fuel from the ship's tanks would help, but is unlikely to be sufficient without other load-lightening measures.

A ship the size of the Ever Given can carry as many as 20,000 twenty-foot containers and an operation to remove these by crane would be highly challenging.

Apart from the difficulties associated with getting suitable cranes close enough to the ship, the process could cause damage and even unbalance the ship.

"You would have to bring large floating cranes - but anything you do right now you would have to determine how it would affect the ship's stability," says marine expert Sal Mercogliano.

"Worst case scenario is that she breaks in half because of [uneven] weight distributions."

British businesses are getting worried as Egypt's Suez Canal continues to be blocked by a Taiwanese mega-container ship for the fourth day in a row.

Seaport Freight Services, a shipping and freight-forwarding company based at the Port of Felixstowe, has 20 containers of goods stranded on the Ever Given.

"We're waiting on food goods like coconut milk and syrups, some spare parts for motors, we've got some fork lift trucks, some Amazon goods on there, all sorts," Steve Parks, director of Seaport Freight Services, tells the BBC.

"All our customers are hearing about it, and they're phoning us to ask when it will be resolved."

The 400m-long (1,312ft) ship Ever Given, operated by Taiwanese transport company Evergreen Marine, is one of the world's largest container vessels.
