The Fast & Furious 9 or Fast 9 series became one of the films that were delayed in release last year. Several films were eventually released streaming.
But Fast & Furious 9 waits until the film gets the right time to be released in theaters.
"We do ensure that we do not release this film on streaming. We want a cinematic experience that is felt by the audience," said director Justin Lin.
Fast 9 was originally supposed to hit theaters in April 2019 but was held back to make room for the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw, which allowed Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and anti-hero Jason Statham franchise to be friends and act together.
The film was later set for release in May 2020, but when a pandemic forced Hollywood and cinemas around the world to close, Universal studios delayed the film's release again for nearly a year, until April 2021.
"I am very grateful to Universal for deciding to wait and establish a safe time so that we can all watch this film in the right way," added Justin Lin.
Fast & Furious 9 hit the box office this week. The film has been released in international theaters and reaped USD 3.4 million in its premiere week.
The film has also set records in other countries outside the US and Canada. Fast & Furious 9 was responded to as the biggest film since COVID-19 hit last year in South Korea.
The record was previously held by Peninsula which is a zombie horror sequel, Train to Busan. The film will be released in the US in June.
In Indonesia alone, Fast & Furious 9 will open in theaters in the same month as the film's release in America.
Fast and Furious and Jurassic World in the Same Movie Universe?
In the midst of the fans' waiting for Fast and Furious 9, suddenly the discourse that Fast and Furious could be one film universe with Jurassic World suddenly emerged. Both of these film franchises fall under the same umbrella, Universal Pictures.
The discourse appeared in the press conference for the film Fast and Furious 9 which was attended by Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and John Cena. Suddenly, the players are asked whether Fast and Furious and Jurassic World might be in the same universe.
Unexpectedly, Michelle Rodriguez enthusiastically answered a journalist's question. Michelle even admitted that she and a number of players had discussed the Fast and Furious relationship with Jurassic World.
"I love it, man! I agree! We talked about this yesterday. This is very funny, but I discussed it yesterday. Because once you reach a certain peak, there is no place to go other than branding and joining," said Michelle Rodriguez.
"That's what big companies do with each other when they get too big, you know what I mean? You just need to brand and join each other," he continued asserting.
However, Michelle Rodriguez notes that even two film franchises that are still in the same studio do not mean that they have to appear together in one film. There are many factors to consider.
"But the only things getting in the way are lawyers, and studios. Because usually the brands you're trying to merge belong to different studios or whatever. But is it under the same umbrella? I don't know. I'm just saying it worked," concluded Michelle.
Interestingly, the director of Fast and Furious 9, Justin Lin, did not mind the discourse that Fast and Furious merged with Jurassic World. In fact, he seemed supportive.
"Well, I would never say no to anything. And the fact that part of our philosophy is to never be put in a box or labeled ... that's all I will say," said Jutin Lin.
Fast and Furious 9 is confirmed to air this year, to be precise in June 2021. Welcoming the release, Universal has released a trailer for its new film which is more than three minutes long.
In the trailer for the film, which also has the title F9, a number of surviving characters are shown. There are even new and old characters such as Dominic Toretto's older brothers, Jakob (John Cena) and Han (Sung Kang).
