Georgia runoff live updates and results: Warnock wins, Ossoff leads Perdue with U.S. Senate control at stake

Democrats closed in on control of the U.S. Senate with a victory in one of Georgia’s two runoff elections and the lead in the second contest. The Rev. Raphael Warnock won his race against Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler. The other Democrat, Jon Ossoff, held a narrower lead over David Perdue (R), whose Senate term lapsed Sunday.

Here’s what to know:
Ossoff has a 16,000-vote lead over Perdue. If the lead holds, the 33-year-old would be the youngest newly elected Democratic senator since Joe Biden in 1973.
In an emotional victory speech, Warnock noted he had received a vote from his mother. “The 82-year-old hands that used to pick somebody else’s cotton went to the polls and picked her youngest son to be a United States senator,” he said.
Warnock will be the first African American Democratic senator from a former Confederate state.
Election Day in Georgia came one day ahead of a joint session of Congress to certify the electoral college vote and cement President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.
The runoffs were overshadowed by President Trump’s false claims of widespread voter fraud in Georgia in the November election.

Runoffs may clear path for $2,000 stimulus checks

Biden will face pressure to send millions of Americans $2,000 stimulus checks and deliver on an aggressive economic agenda as Democrats close in on unified control of Washington with likely wins in Georgia.

The first two years of Obama’s presidency brought the nation the Affordable Care Act. Biden, then vice president, will now have the opportunity to enact an ambitious agenda of his own. First up could be his promise that winning Georgia would bring $2,000 checks to Americans right away.

The $2,000 stimulus payments have gained surprising bipartisan support after Trump seized on the idea, first floated by liberal lawmakers in the spring. Biden has shifted his position, but specifically pledged a $2,000 stimulus payment for voters if Democrats won in Georgia.

His promise comes despite a fierce debate among Democratic economists and lawmakers about the merits of the payments, which some critics argue send too much money to Americans who do not need it. Ossoff and Warnock both pledged on the campaign trail to support $2,000 stimulus payments if elected.

Ossoff thanks Georgia supporters as votes continue to be counted

Although votes are still being counted, Ossoff declared victory in his Georgia Senate race, thanking the people of the state “for the confidence and trust that you have placed in me.”

Ossoff is currently leading his opponent, Perdue, by about 16,000 votes, with nearly all ballots counted.

“This campaign has been about health and jobs and justice for all the people of the state, and they will be my guiding principle,” Ossoff said Wednesday morning. If Ossoff’s lead holds, it would split the upper chamber at 50-50, with Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris holding the tie-breaking vote when she is inaugurated.

The Senate majority would give President-elect Joe Biden an opportunity to enact a more ambitious agenda on campaign promises regarding health-care expansion and immigration.
