Great British Bake Off Edited To Be Midsommar Is Horrifying

A new video of The Great British Bake Off edited to be hit horror film Midsommar is horrifying. The 2019 Ari Aster film left audiences shaken and was a box office hit, while the BBC’s The Great British Bake Off has had a lengthy, though sometimes rocky road to success in the United Kingdom.

After delivering his first feature film Hereditary in 2018, Aster instantly became a filmmaker worth keeping an eye on for horror fans. A perfect example of high-quality modern horror for some, Hereditary’s scares went far beyond simple jump-scare gimmickry and delved deep into psychological terror. Midsommar took this style even further, borrowing numerous elements (far too numerous for some) from 1973 British folk horror classic, The Wicker Man. Aster’s film followed a group of friends who attend an invite-only mid-summer festival in rural Sweden. However, what begins as an intriguing exploration of a new culture slowly transforms into something far more sinister. And although the film has consistently been compared to The Wicker Man, one comparison that no one has ever thought of making is to the hit British baking series, The Great British Bake Off.

Now thanks to YouTube user Gabiamaj, the bizarre blend of Midsommar and The Great British Bake Off into one unforgettable trailer is making the unthinkable real. At just over a minute and a half, the trailer blends audio from Midsommar with footage from Bake Off into a delight of what-ifs. Can baking in the English countryside be creepy? Judging by this trailer, it seems that the answer to that question is definitely yes.

This isn’t the first time that a creative horror fan has provided a new spin on something familiar and benign. Seinfeld fans are likely to be familiar with a trailer that remakes the hit 1990s sitcom into something sinister, just as an industrious Iron Man fan recently reimagined MCU’s Infinity Saga as a horror film. The practice is also becoming more common with deepfakes – a process that completely revolutionizes fan edits and typically ends up creepy even when it’s not trying to be. As for Aster, his follow-up to Midsommar may not be as steeped in horror as his past work has been. Disappointment Blvd., which stars Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix is said to be “a nightmare comedy” which focuses on “an intimate, decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful entrepreneurs of all time.”

Whether or not you’re a fan of either The Great British Bake Off or Midsommar, watching elements of a hit film being restructured into something completely opposite is a lot of fun. It’s hard to say exactly when Aster’s Disappointment Blvd. is going to arrive, so in the meantime, fans can enjoy Gabiamaj’s strange creation and hopefully be motivated to create their own unique takes on Aster’s unsettling horror films.
