Doctors often bled their patients hoping that it would rid them of the foul smells. They did this through bloodletting and the application of leeches. At times, even spiders and toads were prescribed for more magical than medical reasons.

Although their efforts were admirable as they placed themselves at risk, plague doctors did little to help their patients. Even their appearance was horrifying to victims since they often signalled an impending death from the plague.

My original plan was only ever to write for free. I never intended to turn writing into money. Technically, my writing is a business, although I rarely use the business label because it makes it sound out of reach.

folder structure given so far, you’ll end up with all three modules (and their required dependencies) installed inside the node_modules folder located at the root level. However, any file inside its hierarchy will be able to access all three of them.

On July 23, 2019, thirty-five years after Jonelle was abducted, excavators were installing a new pipeline in a remote oil and gas site in Weld County when they found Jonelle’s remains. The investigators confirmed her identity through DNA. An autopsy was released and Jonelle’s death was caused due to a single gunshot wound to her head.

Although the connection between Jonelle and Steve has not yet been explicitly stated, the indictment has strong implications Jonelle’s remains were an integral part in finding her killer and it is likely DNA may have played a major role.

On September 13, 2019, former governor of Idaho candidate Steve Pankey was announced by the Greeley police department as a person of interest in Jonelle’s case. According to the indictment, investigators claimed Steve abducted Jonelle from her home sometime between 8:30 and 9:30 pm. At some point during the kidnapping, he shot her in the head and buried her.

Steve’s computer history showed he made several searches about Jonelle Matthews over the years and attempted to delete that information in 2019 when he knew the investigators had zeroed in on him as their prime suspect.

Along with the set were a cane and a wide-brimmed hat. The hat was mostly used to distinguish them as professionals, the cane allowed them to give instructions and touch patients without physical contact.

Steve attempted to speak with the investigators multiple times over the years about Jonelle’s case. He consistently inserted himself into the investigation, claiming he had information about the kidnapping, yet his statements were always inconsistent and contradicting. At one point, Steve demanded immunity in exchange for information about the case.

One priest recorded that the doctors working in plague houses didn’t get infected with the plague. He specifically noted that their clothes prevented fleas from jumping into their skin but ultimately concluded that the costume’s anti-flea properties were a convenience rather than prevention.

Steve Pankey only lived two miles away from the Matthews at the time of Jonelle’s murder. He went to school for criminal justice and he ran for governor twice, once in 2014 and again in 2018. He was also a youth minister at the same church the Matthews attended.

What can be inferred from the priest’s account is that the costume suits were indeed effective, but for reasons other than “bad smell prevention.” Since the doctors were all covered up, fleas carrying the plague had little opportunity to infect them.

I didn’t start out writing, thinking it would ever be a business. I am proudly an unprofessional. I love the unprofessional status because it allows me to just get on with writing and not get caught up in status games.
