How to Take Care of Your Dog During Quarantine?

Good for you if your furry four-legged friend has been thrilled with how much time you are spending at home recently. We can agree that among all of us, our dogs, at least, love home quarantine. And why wouldn’t they? Many of our pets are enjoying the quality time we are spending with them, walking or talking a lot more.

That said, quarantine with pets doesn’t come without its fair share of challenges like stocking up on essentials, grooming, maintaining high levels of hygiene, and finding new ways to keep our fluffy companions engaged.

The good news is that dog parents everywhere can take a few steps to ensure their dog’s wellbeing, despite the high levels of uncertainty in the world around us.

Here are four tips to help you care for your dog during the quarantine.

  1. Exercise is Key

In a self-isolation period, it’s still important to walk your dog around the neighborhood or let him loose in a fenced-in backyard. A dog needs physical exercise, but it is also essential to keep social distancing in mind, especially when stepping out.

If you have children at home, engage them in your dog's care by encouraging them to try and teach your furry friend some new playful tricks. It will clear their boredom, keep them both engaged and out of your working area!

However, while playing outdoors is refreshing, the fun doesn’t have to end there. If you can’t leave your house or don’t have a backyard, here are some activities you should try to keep your dog mentally engaged.

  • Build an indoor obstacle course using cardboard boxes to give them enough exercise.

  • Treasure hunt – hide healthy treats around your house for your dog to sniff out.

  • Take your dog to the treadmill – if you have one.

  • Play hide and seek with the whole family, including your dog.

  1. Create a Healthy and Relaxing Environment with CBD for Pets

It is extraordinary how our pet's concept of normal has changed on a day-to-day basis. Is it stressful sometimes? Absolutely!

Dogs are highly sensitive to their pet parents' moods and feelings and can pick up your distress, especially when you're trying to teach your kids common core math or having a stressful day. It is helpful to make them feel included and a part of the family. Getting pet friendly toys at home can keep them in a good mood for long. Accessories like English Bulldog antiques are also a great way to make your home a perfect place for your pets.

Also, when dogs are forced to spend a greater amount of time in confined spaces such as apartments, it is not uncommon for them to get a little stressed and, in some cases, even depressed.

CBD or cannabidiol has several incredible benefits for your pet dog's health and can help manage a variety of mental conditions, including anxiety, stress, or even specific phobias.

CBDfx capsules for pets brought from a reliable seller will be GMO, toxic, and pesticide-free and contain pure CBD extract from hemp. CBD has anti-inflammatory and anticonvulsant properties that can offer fast, natural relief from stress and anxiety without producing unwanted side effects.

However, ensure that you consult a vet before you start giving CBD to your pet.

  1. Practice Portion Control to Avoid Overfeeding

Overfeeding can occur in two ways:

  • Mealtime

  • Extra treats

You may be feeling a tendency to eat more than necessary since you’re spending all your time indoors. Consequently, the more you're around your dog, the more likely you will share your food throughout the day without even realizing it.

All these feedings, combined with lower amounts of physical activity, can result in an unhealthy dog.

Be sure not to overfeed your furry friend and adjust meal proportions accordingly if you’ve shared your food with them throughout the day. Also, keep in mind that treats should only make up 10% of your dog’s diet and should not be substituted with whole meals.

Essential nutrients for dogs include proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and fats. Your canine must have a steady intake of these vital nutrients to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the quarantine.

The best way to figure out portion control for your dog is to consult with your veterinarian how often you should feed him and what kinds of food he should give you as snacks. You can also check out the extract from do si dos strain for your dog.

  1. Groom Your Dog at Home

For health and welfare reasons, dogs will regularly require extra grooming attention, especially now that you can't make it to the groomer. For most dogs, who normally see a groomer every seven to eight weeks, things may be getting a little hairy.

So, how do you safely groom your dog at home?

  • Bathe your dog at least once every two months or at least once a month if they are spending a lot of time indoors.

  •  Bath your dog every time they get into something sticky or smelly.

  • Brush and comb your dog’s hair to remove dirt and keep it in good condition. How often you brush your dog will depend on the coat type.

  • Spread natural oils on your dog’s coat to prevent tangles and to help keep the skin clean and irritant-free.

  • Trim dry, clean fur around the face, ears, feet, and tail. Make sure only to trim excess hair.

  • Check the feet regularly and trim the nails if they are about to touch the ground.

  • Gently wipe any gunk in their eyes using a damp cotton ball or a piece of gauze.

  • Brush their teeth regularly, along with a healthy diet and chew toys to maintain oral health.

  •  Be mindful of your dogs’ skin and monitor excessive scratching, chewing, or licking.

Grooming is a great time to bond with your dog while instilling a sense of safety and protection, so don’t forget to use treats as rewards!

The Bottom Line

More than anyone else, dogs are delighted to be spending so much time with you during the quarantine. Make sure to keep an eye on your dog and stimulate him to stay healthy and happy indoors.

That said, it is also crucial to maintain daily routines as much as possible so that when we regain some form of normalcy, there are no changes in behavior and more so with older dogs who can be more disorientated with changing habits.
