And that gets at the head-scratching over what Salesforce does. It’s hardly surprising that lots of people don’t know the details of a B2B giant with basically no consumer-facing products. I suspect that Salesforce puzzlement is most acute in the Bay Area, and that this is precisely because its Salesforce Tower headquarters is a prominent, relatively recent, and perhaps not universally popular addition to the San Francisco skyline — so everyone knows the name, but many have no reason to be familiar with its actual business. Similarly, its name pops up in business headlines over stories that focus more on financial performance than the details of its offerings, so it rings a bell and remains mysterious at the same time. And if you’ve missed either of those, you’ve probably seen one of its many commercials resulting from a $7.9 billion ad spend this year alone.
