One day, while scrolling threw her Facebook feed with her dog, Jane Horowitz realized that the thrill she got from the site was not shared by her best boy. So Jane created Pawtrist, an app for pets to share videos and images of their life to other social media savvy animals.

One dog mamma writes, “My 3-week-old puppy is posting pictures of herself in provocative poses. While I respect her right to find her own style, and ability to do all this without thumbs, she’s posting things that make other animals think she’s a much older dog. Questions about her being in heat are unceasing.”
Others are troubled by what they call a rise in the pet-hipster culture.

When I asked about his preferences he wouldn’t explain it either, he just sneered at me. But then he’s a cat. That’s kind of what he always looks like. Still, not cool.
Lately reports indicate that many of these social media animals are displaying signs of depression. Gloria, a corgi mutt hasn’t left her spot on the couch for nearly a week. Christine, the dog’s owner, says that after seeing so many dogs represented as long-legged and purebred, Gloria feels ugly and unsure of her identity.
Another owner who wishes to remain anonymous says her cat was claiming she was rescued in order to create a brand story. When other cats found out the lie, they harassed the cat until she quit Pawtrist altogether. She was also forced to cancel her upcoming pet grooming product line amidst the controversy.

Time will tell if this new site will bring animals together, highlighting the creativity and similarities between them, or cause more rifts as technology becomes their primary method of communication.
